Pregnant again- too soon?

Hi All,

I am freaking out a bit as I just found out I’m pregnant again after an ectopic in March/April.

I had one shot of methotrexate on the 28th March but had to have surgery on the 2nd April.

We were not planning to get pregnant this quickly as we were told to wait three months- although it has been 3 months now it would have only been two months after methotrexate at the time of conception. I am now really worried this could affect the baby/ lead to issues. I also drank wine last week not realising or expecting to be pregnant. I’m just feeling so anxious that things I have done might affect this pregnancy

Any experience or help on what I should do would be appreciated

Dear J_russell,

Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy.

As you have mentioned, we generally advise taking folic acid supplements for 12weeks before TTC following methotrexate injection. If you have not been able to do this, I would advise speaking to your GP who maybe able to complete a blood test to check your folate levels and advise you further.

Regarding alcohol, experts are still unsure exactly how much – if any – alcohol is completely safe for you to have while you’re pregnant, so the safest approach is not to drink at all while you’re expecting.

I think the main risk would come if you continued to drink alcohol now you know you are pregnant, but again you can always chat this through with your GP.

Please do not forget to book in for your early pregnancy scan either at 6 weeks. You can do this by booking directly with you EPU or if you are unable to do this, your GP can refer.

Sending much love and positive thoughts

Hello, did you see your GP or take any advice about the timing of your pregnancy and methotrexate? I am in the same boat and feeling very anxious! Sending you lots of luck and positivity xxx

Really sorry for such a late reply, i didn’t get a notification!

I was put on a higher dose of folic acid to counter the effects of the methotrexate. I am now 18 weeks, so far so good . . I hope everything is ok with you? x x x

Thanks, so far so good. 14 weeks today. Fingers crossed xx

I wanted to give an update on my experience. I had methotrexate on 27 May and conceived on 24 July so approx. 2 calendar months after and only 1 full menstrual cycle.

I’m now 16 weeks pregnant and had an early anomaly scan yesterday to double-check the methotrexate hasn’t caused any issues and everything is looking perfect!

Good luck to everyone going through or recovering from an ectopic pregnancy. Horrible experience but there is hope xxx
