Pregnant 2 months after methotrexate

Hi,

I had an ectopic in May and was treated with a dose of methotrexate on 26 May. I ovulated late June and then had my period on 7 July.

I’ve now found out I’m pregnant (8 August) so it’s only been one full cycle (one period) and 2.5 months since methotrexate. I’ve been taking lots of folic acid and methylfolate since my HCG levels dropped, so hoping it’s Ok.

Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you!

Dear Zebby,

Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy,

With Methotrexate, we generally advise that you should wait until your hCG levels have fallen to below 5mIU/mL and then take a folic acid supplement for 12 weeks before you try to conceive. This is because the Methotrexate may have reduced the level of folate in your body which is needed to ensure a baby develops healthily.

If this has not been the case, it maybe worth speaking to a medical professional who may offer to test your blood levels of folic acid to see what your levels are, which may put your mind at ease.

Don’t forget to book in for your early pregnancy scan. In the UK doctors usually carry out an internal transvaginal scan at around six weeks with subsequent pregnancies after an ectopic. This is because there is a reasonable chance of seeing an embryo around this six week mark.

We advise contacting your local EPU, reminding them of your ectopic pregnancy and booking an appointment. If you are unable to self refer, contact your GP who will be able to do this for you.

Sending much love,

Karen x
