Pregnant after previous ectopic

Come for advice because I’m anxious :cold_sweat:.

I had a really bad experience with an ectopic pregnancy back in 2016, I was told in a&e I wasn’t in enough pain or bleeding enough for it to be an ectopic pregnancy but they referred me to the EPU. They monitored me by doing blood tests every 48 hours but I didn’t get scanned until 7+4 by which time my right tube had ruptured and I required emergency surgery and very little support or aftercare. They did tell me that if I ever got pregnant again I would need an early scan or checks.

Anyway, fast forward to now, I have had a +test this week I am now 4+5 weeks. I spoke to the Dr earlier in the week and she said “as long as I don’t have symptoms like last time I’ll be fine but if I do get symptoms like last time to go straight to A&E.” Another Dr then rang me about something else and said “I could ring the EPAU and see what they said. If they do need a referral he will do one.” I’m just confused, scared and anxious and don’t know what the right thing to do is.

Can anyone offer advice or help please. Thank you in advance.

Hi

Congratulations on your positive test! I’m only 4 weeks post having an ectopic but when I was in hospital I was told if I were to get pregnant again to call EPU & I would automatically be offered an early scan to check it was in the right place. They said they would usually do it around 6 weeks. Not sure if that’s standard or if it is different in each hospital but I was told I shouldn’t need a referral for it.

Hope that helps & best of luck with everything! Xx

Congratulations to you too :revolving_hearts:.

Thank you for your reassurance, drs making me think I’m going mad! I’ve got the EPU number and I’m going to give them a call on Monday.

I’ve since read on a different post that it’s NICE guidelines to scan you at 6 weeks after a previous ectopic.

I have no pain or bleeding so I just need to try and think and be positive positive

Read and just wanted to say that I’m thinking about you. I too am pregnant again after an ectopic, and my anxiety has me so fearful! Remember that the odds are in our favor even if it doesn’t feel like it.

Hi all,

Just looking for some people in the same situation as today I’m really struggling with feeling anxious.

I am around 6-6.5 weeks and have my 6.5 week early scan this week.

I had an ectopic in October and one of my tubes was removed.

It’s hard to cope with general life when this consumes you! Congratulations to you all :white_heart:

Dear ladies,

I completely understand how anxious the wait is for the early pregnancy scan. I wish I could cast forward time for you. Try to keep your minds busy. Box sets, read, puzzles. I would ordinarily say go for a gentle stroll but perhaps not in this freezing weather!

Although I do not wish to alarm you, I do have to remind you to seek urgent medical advice with any bleeding or worsening abdominal pain or you feel dizzy and unwell.

I will be sending positive vibes and keeping fingers and toes crossed. We will be here for you for as long as you need.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Thank you for the replies. I had my early scan yesterday which confirmed the pregnancy is intrauterine :tada:.

However it is a pregnancy if unknown viability because it was too soon to see much or get a heartbeat. However they could see the gestational sac and yolk sac in the right place. The measurements are good and dated me at 6+2. I’m keeping everything crossed that all continues to go well.

Don’t lose hope ladies, thinking of you during these anxious times :revolving_hearts:

Hi, hope you dont mind me jumping in.

I know this thread is older but hoping to find some reassurance out there.

I had an ectopic pregnancy in August last year, resolved with methotrexate.

I never had any bleeding and very little pain, but I knew something was wrong as my shoulder was so painful! The pain was in my left arm, at the top of my shoulder and would travel to my neck.

They scanned and found the ectopic at 6 weeks.

I am 5 months on, and just found out im pregnant again at 4 weeks. Ive got such mixed emotions. Im happy and absolutely terrified.

Ive had a tiny bit of spotting (however I think this was because I had a smear test). No pains. But my shoulder is a tiny bit achy. I dont know if its just my mind in over drive? Hyper sensitive about everything.

Any reassurance would be so great at this point.

I just dont know how Id cope if it happened again…

Thank you.

Dear Catherine,

Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy,

We certainly can feel aches and pains when we next fall pregnant, I know I did.

I would advise trying some simple over the counter pain relief such as paracetamol (as long as there are no contraindications for you) to see If this settles your shoulder pain.

If it does not settle and your sporting continues or worsens, I would advise you to seek urgent medical advice, just to be on the safe side and put your mind at rest.

If everything does settle down, don’t forget to contact your local EPU to book an early pregnancy scan at around 6weeks. If you are unable to self refer, please speak to your GP surgery who will be able to arrange this for you.

Sending much love and positive thoughts,

Karen x
