Positive hCG test 3 weeks after surgery

Hi all,

I experienced a ruptured ectopic pregnancy on 27th March (I was nearly 9 weeks) and had emergency surgery to remove my right fallopian tube and the pregnancy and I needed a blood transfusion due to internal bleeding.

I was told I should do a pregnancy test, which I did two days ago, 2 weeks and 5 days after surgery and it was positive. How long did it take others hCG levels to fall? I was told my hCG levels were 25,000 before surgery.

Also, can you ovulate before hCG levels have completely dropped? I’ve been feeling some discomfort similar to ovulation. I usually experience some pain during ovulation but it seems worse than normal. Confused! :?

I hope someone can help.

Many thanks!

Dear emily1,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss.

I am afraid if is difficult to predict how long it will take for your hormone levels reach non-pregnant levels. As we are all individual, our bodies respond differently and it depends on factors like how high levels reached and our unique physiology. I appreciate that it can be a drawn out process. Also, in terms of chances of future successful pregnancies, studies do not show a significant difference between treatment routes, whether surgical, medical using methotrexate or expectant management (allowing time for the body to resolve the pregnancy itself).

Before having a period you have to ovulate and it is possible to become pregnant without having a proper period first, if you are not using contraception. We and many doctors advise waiting at least two menstrual cycles before trying to conceive to allow time for your body to heal and emotions to surface.

If you remain concerned at all, please contact your local EPU or your GP to discuss your worries.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Hi Karen,

Thank you very much for replying. I thought I let you know that I took a test a week later and it was negative, so I was pleased about that.

Best wishes
