Pain before & after period

Hi there

I had an ectopic pregnancy that was successfully treated with 2 methotrexate injections (the last injection was June 1). I just had my second period, and have had pain in my lower back and also Front - it feels like a heavy pulling kind of dull pain around my ovaries. It’s strange as I’ve never had this type of pain after my period has finished. I was also wiped out/exhausted the entire day before my period, which has also never happened (usually this tiredness arrives the same day I get my period).

Just wondering if anyone else out there has experienced this after an ectopic?

The doctor also said I’d be able to start trying again 3 months after the ectopic, so this September, but kind of nervous with this pain!

Thanks and appreciate any advice or similar stories!

Hi Sooki99,

I’m so sorry that you have suffered an ectopic pregnancy and loss, and now, are going through this worrying time. It can be very normal to feel pains after ectopic pregnancy. I’m not medically qualified and am unable to comment on your particular situation, however women in these boards have reported new sensations associated with their periods following ectopic pregnancy. Sometimes its related to their surgeries, pain from adhesions or scar tissue which forms as part of the recovery process, but it could also be because of ovulation pains as many women feel ovulation pains when they did not before. It might also be as a result of heightened awareness after your ordeal.

Periods are often not be on the same schedule as before. It might be heavier or lighter and it may be more painful than normal. However, although there is no medical reason for it, women do very often report some irregularity to their cycle for several months after an ectopic pregnancy.

To assist, you could keep a pain diary too - when you experience the pain and where, its intensity and anything that helps like rest or pain relief, and noting when your period starts. You can also speak to your doctors sooner, taking these notes with you a GP appointment and the details will help your doctors best manage your symptoms. It is always better to get checked out to be on the safe side.

With good wishes,

Michele
