Periods before/ after ectopic

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone else has had irregular periods before and after their ectopic? Cannot find the answers online anywhere and feeling a bit alone if anyone can relate or advise please…

Basically, I was on a progestogen only contraceptive pill for a few years, during which time I didn’t have a period. After coming off of the pill I fell pregnant after just 2 periods - both of which were excrutiatingly painful. Unfortunately it was ectopic and I was treated with a methotrexate shot on 23rd January - my HCG levels peaked on 27th Jan at 5500 but then dropped to negative by 16th Feb (during the ectopic, no pain whatsoever!). My period arrived on 3rd March and appeared to be really light with no pain - literally only a few spots except when I urinated lots would come out, even clots. I didnt think too much of it and dont have a “normal” period to refer back to and assumed it was just a one-off. However, I’m on my 2nd period now and it’s the same - barely anything is flowing out unless I’m peeing.

I’m worrying myself thinking there may be a blockage or something that could have caused the EP in the first place. Then again it may be a reaction to the methotrexate. Or could just be nothing! Anyone please if you could shed some light? Thank you

Dear Emily_L,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss.

It is common for periods to be irregular following ectopic pregnancy. Your periods can take a while to get back to a rhythm that is more usual for you, although this maybe difficult given that you did not have regular periods before. I also found that my periods changed for a few months after my losses.

Periods may be more painful or less so than usual, heavier or lighter, last for longer or shorter than usual – there really is no set pattern. You should be able to manage the discomfort with over-the-counter pain relief and should not be soaking a pad in less than an hour. If this is not the case, you should seek medical attention

Unfortunately I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your symptoms but can give you general advice.

Our periods are due to the shedding of the lining of the uterus, I am presuming that your ectopic pregnancy was located in a fallopian tube, as these lie above the uterus, they are not involved in bleeding during periods.

If you remain concerned about your bleeding patterns, please see your GP for advice as they have access to your medical records and history.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Hi Karen,

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes it was located in my fallopian tube, you dont know how much of a relief it is to know that the 2 aren’t related in any way (tubes and periods)!

Just a bit paranoid about starting to try again if there’s potentially an ongoing issue in there but I’m sure it’s just coincidences and my body getting back to normal.

Thanks again for the reassurance,

Em
