IVF and ectopic

Hi all,

Looking for anyone who has had experience of an ectopic following IVF. It’s been such a learning curve for me - from thinking surely that’s impossible to seeing mine on the scanning screen. We had a course of IVF and went on to have a fresh transfer. I started bleeding 5 days before the day of the pregnancy test so I was really surprised (and delighted) to see it was positive. The bleeding sadly continued, with fluctuating hgc, so at the start of July I was told to come off the progesterone and that I was having a miscarriage. Two weeks later I’m still testing positive, and still bleeding, and last week they found a small ectopic in my right Fallopian tube. I’m following the hospital advice of expectant management. We started IVF back in May so it’s just felt like life has been on hold and now even more so. If anyone had any advice on this waiting time and how to get by I’d be hugely grateful. My bleeding has been going on now for 5 weeks, it’s just exhausting and I’m really struggling.

Thank you x

Dear Teeb,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss. Ectopic pregnancy at any time is difficult, following fertility treatment is heartbreaking and my heart truly goes out to you.

Following ectopic pregnancy loss, we and many medical professionals advise waiting for two menstrual cycles before trying to conceive. This “wait” is to allow your cycles to resume and have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - important information for checking for ectopic pregnancy in the future. It also allows time for your emotions to surface and be worked through after your ordeal. However as you are having fertility treatment, I would advise speaking to your fertility specialist to discuss when would be best to start further treatment.

For now, be kind to yourself and allow time to grieve and to heal both physically and emotionally.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Hey

Sorry you are going through this. Expectant management sounds like the doctors think your body alone will resolve itself but im sorry its taking long.

I had a fresh ivf transfer, 5 and a half weeks I had a weird what I thought was bad gas shooting through my tummy, thought trapped wind in my left side, then spotting, turned out it was ectopic, they couldn’t see it I think because I have a fibroid near it but my hcg went up, down and up. Had methotrexate injection. I bled for 12 weeks and suffered in pain.

An ectopic from ivf is so disheartening. I never dreamed it could happen. I don’t really have a choice but to keep trying with ivf. I did get pregnant again but it was a chemical. I heard frozen transfers there’s less risk of an ectopic.
