Irregular periods

Hi i wanted some advice, i had an ectopic pregnancy a year ago, my periods were 30-31 days but then one month it went from 31 days to 36 days then went back to normal but last month my period came after 42 days and this month im 37 days havent started yet and im not pregnant. Im just worried. I did take antibiotics 3 weeks ago for a week for an ear infection.

Followin my above post- i had my ectopic on 20th august 2019- my 1st period came on 26/9/19-then the following-

25/10-after 31 days

26/11-after 32 days

31/12-after 36 days

2/2- after 34 days

3/3-after 31 days

8/4- after 37 days

8/5- after 31 days

8/6 - after 32 days

20/7- after 43 days

Im worried or is it normal after an ectopic

Dear Sm2304,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

Periods can be delayed for a number of reasons including stress or even (as surprising as it may sound) excessive exercise or weight loss. Doctors normally consider menstrual cycles of between 23-42 days to be within normal parameters.

I very much understand that strong desire to conceive. I appreciate how frustrating it can be if it isn’t happening as quickly as we would like. Conceiving successfully can take time and can take some couples more than a year or so.

While generally it is possible to conceive after an ectopic pregnancy, the amount of time it takes varies from couple to couple. Factors include age, general health, reproductive health and how often you have sex, among other things. It may be comforting to know that 65% of women are successfully pregnant within 18 months of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy and some studies suggest this rises to around 85% after two years.

Importantly, help is available if conceiving naturally has not yet been successful after some time trying - and the EPT advises that women under 35 should seek medical advice following 12 months trying to conceive and those over 35 should seek advice after 6 months. I would therefore advise speaking to your GP who maybe able to complete tests or refer you to a fertility specialist.

Sending much love,

Karen x
