HSG today - seeking advice

Hi everyone,

I had surgery to remove my ectopic pregnancy and left tube just over two months ago. Today I had a HSG and the dye flowed through my right tube, but slowly. The doctor said there was some narrowing but it was patent. He didn’t seem concerned and said I can try naturally, but having experienced two ectopics (both left tube) I am terrified about having another. While I would love to conceive naturally, I’m considering IVF because my remaining tube is narrow. Has anyone else experienced this during a HSG and gone on to conceive naturally, or via IVF? I would love to hear from anyone in a similar situation.

Also for anyone considering a HSG but worrying about the pain (I was worried) my experience was positive. Some period-type cramps for a short moment, but largely pain free.

Thanks,

KM

Hi

Thank you for sharing your experience, I am going to get the HSG done and I’m very nervous, I hate smear tests I find it soo painful so dreading this!!

Also did you take some painkillers prior to the test?

I took two paracetamol about 45 minutes before the procedure which might have helped. All I experienced was a strong period type cramp at one point but that faded very quickly. It wasn’t half as bad as I expected, and I am sensitive to pain (I fainted after a colposcopy). I have read that it can be more painful if the tube is blocked and of course, everyone feels pain differently depending on their situation. But for me, it really was fine. I hope yours goes very smoothly and you get the results you’re after xx

Thank you, really appreciate your reply.

I was told to ring on the first day of my period and then they will book me in and yes I think I will take some pain killers also.

I shall keep you posted xx

No worries. Yes that’s what I did. Rang on day 1 and had the procedure on day 5 of my cycle. Let me know how you go x

Hi Kathryn

I had my HSG on Wednesday. I took 2 paracetamol and did find it painful but it only last mins, I don’t get results until my next appointment. I’m worried, thinking if it was painful for me, my tubes may be blocked!

Sorry for the delay with this. I wouldn’t be worried about pain as everyone experiences pain differently. I got my results straight away at mine which was helpful to relieve the anxiety.

Please let me know how you go.

In more positive news I fell pregnant my first cycle after my HSG, and just had a scan at 5.5 weeks to rule out ectopic. It is in my uterus so very relieved about that.

I hope your results give you the news you’re hoping for xxx

Congratulations on your good news, it gives me lots of hope, how long had you been trying for?

Yes I had my hopes up very high this month also after the HSG but not in luck.

I’m going to ring on Monday and chase it up!

Thank you! I’m not quite celebrating yet because it is early days, but I’m so relieved it is in the right place.

I’ve been trying since April, with an ectopic pregnancy in May and surgery in between, so have been quite lucky in falling pregnant quickly. My previous ectopic was a few years ago with an ex partner.

I really hope you get good news from your HSG and that this month is your month! Keep me updated x

Hi Kathryn Mary

Yes I can understand your feelings right now and why your not celebrating just yet. I wish and pray all the best to you.

I had a phone call after inquiring about my results from my docs secretary. She basically said one of my tube is blocked but the other is fine and that I shouldn’t worry about it. My doc will see me in November now.

What is worrying for me, is that I had an ectopic on my right side and she told me my left tube is blocked

I’m really confused and trying not to worry about it, until my next appointment so I can get more details.

How confusing and frustrating. I hope that once you have an appointment things become much clearer for you and you can work out a plan. And remember at the end of the day that a HSG isn’t foolproof. Fallopian tubes can go into spasm and appear blocked when they’re not. The specialist said that’s why my remaining tube may have appeared narrowed, but nonetheless, here I am pregnant so there is definitely hope. 7.5 weeks now and saw and heard a heartbeat last week. I really hope things progress well for you. Keep me updated on it all xx
