Hi everyone,
I had surgery to remove my ectopic pregnancy and left tube just over two months ago. Today I had a HSG and the dye flowed through my right tube, but slowly. The doctor said there was some narrowing but it was patent. He didn’t seem concerned and said I can try naturally, but having experienced two ectopics (both left tube) I am terrified about having another. While I would love to conceive naturally, I’m considering IVF because my remaining tube is narrow. Has anyone else experienced this during a HSG and gone on to conceive naturally, or via IVF? I would love to hear from anyone in a similar situation.
Also for anyone considering a HSG but worrying about the pain (I was worried) my experience was positive. Some period-type cramps for a short moment, but largely pain free.
Thanks,
KM
Dear KathrynMary86,
I am unsure as to actual figures on how many women conceive naturally following HSG testing, however, help is available if conceiving naturally has not yet been successful after some time trying. The EPT advises that women under 35 should seek medical advice following 12 months trying to conceive and those over 35 should seek advice after 6 months.
While generally it is possible to conceive after an ectopic pregnancy, the amount of time it takes varies from couple to couple. Factors include age, general health, reproductive health and how often you have sex, among other things. It may be comforting to know that 65% of women are successfully pregnant within 18 months of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy and some studies suggest this rises to around 85% after two years.
I would advise speaking to your GP about referral to fertility specialists as guidelines can vary depending on where you live.
Sending much love,
Karen x
