scared going have HSG on tuesday

Hi,ladies

I had EP 2 years ago ,they removed left tube and our darling baby with heartbeat at 9 weeks left to Heaven . Since than we have been trying pretty much always OPK tests and making love.MY DH has low sperm count ,we are doing BD during ovulation all my tests confirmed healthy ovulation’s and good endometrium .(blood work and repeated pelvic scans)

WE are married 6 and half years and we do not use any contraception my husband tests has been test for sperms many times is always on low levels.(lowest 9 millions, highest 18(that time we conceived our daughter)last test only 12 millions in ml,he is going have another test in 2 weeks. WE have one daughter 4 years old Praise to God for this gift. With my daughter I had preclamsia and c-section(6 weeks early) our daughter was born at 34 weeks and I had C-section. Before our daughter we were struggling getting pregnant 2 years and I did HSG test which showed that time clear tubes and womb all was ok test was extremely painful. After i had laparoscopic surgery with ectopic doctors 2 years ago doctors could see I developed pelvic scarring adhesions . My test is coming this Tuesday next week 9.8.2016 and I AM scared how painful it is going be this time i have only one tube right tube ,no left tube,c-section scar on the womb(which always showing on scan) and pelvic adhesion. Could you write me if your hsg was ok or painful after ectopic pregnancy and you had only one tube .I want to find out if my tube is clear or if it is reason why we do not getting pregnant is my husband low sperm count. I wish you God blessing I being blessed with healthy kids.Katie

Hi Katie,

I’m sorry to hear your issues with conceiving. But as you say, what a blessing that you have a precious 4 year old daughter.

My history… 2 ectopics. 1st ectopic November 2014 resulted in left tube removal. 2nd ectopic (cornual ectopic- in the stump of the removed tube) May 2015.

February 2016 I had a HSG which thankfully showed that my remaining right tube was clear.

Prior to the HSG I googled (why do we do it to ourselves!) about other women’s experiences of HSGs. The reports ranged from - ‘it was fine, it was like a smear, I don’t know what all the fuss is about’ to ‘oh my goodness, worst pain of my life, worse than childbirth!’

Like you I was scared of the procedure and asked my doctor to prescribe a strong painkiller (something more than paracetamol/ibuprofen) - I think I asked for codeine but she prescribed Tramadol and also an anti-anxiety pill (Xanax).

For me I was very glad that I had these tablets as I wasn’t as anxious during the procedure. It was painful (a few swear words popped out!) but it was a fairly short ordeal for me- I think it helped that for me, the dye spilled through almost immediately as my tube was clear. I believe that if there is a blockage it can be more painful due to the increased pressure of the dye because of the blockage. I had period-like cramps for a couple of hours after the procedure and had some mild discomfort for the rest of the day although Tramadol helped with this too.

Also, depending on your particular doctor’s protocol, you may or may not be encouraged to take a Doxycycline antibiotic to reduce the risk of infection. I had three 100mg tablets in total- 1 the night before the HSG, 1 the morning of and 1 that evening. If your dr doesn’t mention it you could ask for it if you feel it will be beneficial for you. As I said, some doctors don’t feel that there is any need for an antibiotic.

My advice to you would be- decide for yourself if you want a strong painkiller, an anti-anxiety tablet and the Doxycycline and if you do, then insist that your doctor prescribe them to you prior to the procedure - where I was I had to be proactive and get the tablets from my GP the day before the procedure as the person doing the HSG was a radiologist who didn’t prescribe meds, she was just doing lots of HSGs one after the other.

For me, 2 months after the HSG, I conceived. Some people think that a female has increased fertility for up to about 6 months after an HSG due to ‘blowing the cobwebs’ out of the tubes. Other people don’t believe it makes a difference. But at least after you’ve had it you will know whether your tube is clear or not and you and your husband can decide what to do next.

Good luck with it all. xxx

Dear WANDER,

THANKS SO much for your long reply very kind of you.I had HSG second time in my life (first time 5 and half year ago) and this Tuesday. Great news is my right tube is clear and healthy womb HSG did hurt speculum was massive and did hurt a lot and when they fill the womb it did hurt one moment a lot and I did scream that second. It was soon over and they told me all good I was happy it was over before HSG i took high amount of ibuprofen.I did not take any anxiety drugs I was scared and I did pray rosary during it.

I have still hope with open tube I am 39 so i know my changes are low plus my husband Low sperm count for many years but because of outcome of HSG there is still hope,I am so so happy for you you got pregnant after HSG fantastic news. How old is you baby now or are you still pregnant.Hug you

God bless you all

Hi Katie,

Great news that all was good regarding your HSG.

I am now 5 months pregnant. Found out 2 days ago at our scan that it is a boy.

My due date is not until 3rd January but due to my previous ectopic operations there is a chance of uterine rupture if I go into natural labour so my obstetrician has said my c-section will be scheduled when I am 37 weeks so around about 13th December.

Good luck on your TTC journey. Keep us posted. xxx
