Ectopic pregnancy after tubal ligation

Good morning, i have 2 healthy beautiful baby boys ages 5 and almost 2. Heres my story and would love some help and guidance.

We went on vacation and came home Tuesday night, after spending a week with friends my husband and i were happy to be back home in our own bed. We were being intimate and afterwards i was experiencing server pain of my left side of my stomach. My husband had gotten called into work as we were excepting a bug snow storm the next couple of days. So as always i just brushed it off and tried to go back to sleep by morning the pain was so bad I decided to go to the doctors. My PCP check me out and thought i may have had a cyst ruptured, so he called my obgyn and they wanted to see me asap. When i got to the office they did blood work and pregnancy test and it came back positive, umm i have my tubes tied 2 yrs ago after giving birth to my last son so how can this happen. From there he did an ultrasound and things went down hill from there the doctor discovered that i was indeed pregnant but not in the uterus in my tube. However, I didn’t need surgery as my tube didn’t rupture and my dr said my hcg levels weren’t that high he can treat it with medication which would basically break down the pregnancy and i would have a miscarriage within the next 3-7 days. I have so many things running through my head right now. I was wondering how have women coped with this type of sistuation? I literally had my tubes tied as i have medical problems and we decided that we didn’t want to have anymore kids, i recently just found out after a tubal liaison its more common than we think. If i knew this i may have went in another direction.

Thanks for listening

Dear Shorelife,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss and the worrying time you are going through.

I have added an NHS site which gives more information regarding ectopic pregnancy following female sterilisation.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/contracep … ilisation/

As it states, sterilisation is over 99% effective and whilst it does not cause ectopic pregnancy, sadly if you were to become pregnant, it is more likely to be an ectopic pregnancy. I must emphasise that becoming pregnant with this method of contraception is rare.

It sounds as though your Dr’s have decided to treat you with expectany management. We have more information about expectant management here-

https://www.ectopic.org.uk/patients/treatment/

As a gentle reminder, please do not undertake any strenuous exercise or lifting or housework while your hCG levels are dropping. While I do not want to alarm you, there remains the risk of rupture even with low or declining hCG levels. You should not resume exercise until your hCG levels are falling consistently and are in the low 100s.

I would advise speaking to your doctor’s if you remain concerned. Please do take it easy, allow time to recover both physically and emotionally,

We will be here for you for as long as you need,

Sending much love,

Karen x
