3 ectopics in a row

Hey!

I had my first ectopic in 2018, I didn’t know I was pregnant until the pain started as I was on the pill, this one was fairly straightforward and came away on it’s own with no medical management, almost exactly a year later I had another ectopic in the same tube, I was treated with methotrexate and sent home but a few days later it ruptured so I had surgery and had my right tube removed.

Looking back I think now would’ve been a good time for them to have a really good look at my remaining tube but I was told it’s unlucky etc. (I’m not blaming the doctors they have been amazing)

Feb 2021 found out I was pregnant on Valentine’s Day was super early on as we were trying so I knew as soon as I’d missed a period, started bleeding a week later and was treated for a pregnancy of an unknown location, fast forward a few weeks the bleeding and symptoms got worse and I was admitted back into hospital with another ectopic now in my left tube, my hcg levels were up and down for a couple of weeks and eventually I had the methotrexate and this time it seems to have worked!

I am wondering if there is anyone else who has had 3 consecutive ectopics and gone on to have a natural pregnancy? I am getting referred to the fertility clinic once I get fully discharged and will know more then but I have really struggled to find anyone that has had 3 in a row even the doctor told me that they’d never known it!

Any advice or any of your similar stories would be a great help!

Thank you

Hi Sdean24,

I am so sorry to hear that you have been through three ectopic pregnancies and losses. The experiences leave us with so many questions. Unfortunately, I am not medically qualified to comment on your specific situation. I encourage you to continue working with your medical providers. I suffered two ectopic pregnancies and also told it was unlucky. I know that this is not quite the definitive diagnosis we would like.

Often, and this is difficult, we search for reasons for what happened, but many times there are none. There is nothing you did to cause, nor nothing to be done to prevent an ectopic pregnancy. Having one remaining tube means that the structures are in place to allow for future pregnancies. By falling pregnant with these pregnancies, your fertility is showing it is possible.

I wish I could provide you with more certainty. I went on to conceive naturally with one tube, twice. I encourage you to seek the answers you are looking for, but also give yourself time to heal. These boards are here for you throughout and are a safe space for your questions and thoughts.

With good wishes,

Michele
