Two ectopic pregnancies within seven months

Hello,

I had my first ectopic pregnancy in August 2020 in my left tube that was successfully treated with two doses of Methotrexate.

I found out that I was pregant two weeks ago but shortly after started to experience spotting and pains. On Tuesday it was confirmed that it was another ectopic pregnancy this time in my right tube. I was again treated with Methotrexate and now just hoping it works and I dont have to have surgery.

I am also having pains on my left side which the doctor says is due to a 6cm cyst on my left ovary.

I know that I am lucky to still have both my tubes but I am concerned about my future fertility. Having now had two ectopics one in each tube makes me concerned that both my tubes are damaged or not functioning properly. I had an HSG done in November after my first ectopic which said that both tubes were clear. But obviously having had another ectopic, there must be an issue with my tubes.

Is there any hope to get pregnant naturally or is IVF my only chance? I also know that an ectopic could still happen with IVF so i am really worried I won’t ever have kids.

Does anyone have any advice or any similar stories?

Nicole

Hi Nicole,

I saw your post this morning and remembered replying to your earlier posts after your first ectopic. I am so terribly sorry to hear that you have had to go through this again. It is incredibly unfair and I know how it can leave us with even more questions. I also suffered two ectopic pregnancies within 7 months of one another. It was an incredibly hard experience and I encourage you to give yourself extra care, time and space.

As I’m not medically qualified, I can’t speak to your specific situation on what next steps to take. I would certainly encourage you to speak further with your GP. I recall in my situation the doctors told me it was “bad luck”, and I was not pleased with that diagnosis at all. However, and this was only clear to me later on, my fertility may have declined, but it was not gone and I went on to have successful pregnancies.

As best as you are able, try to give your self and your body some time to heal. I know that we seek answers for why this has happened and we want to remedy the situation. It is not always clear why ectopic pregnancies occur and that is why they can feel so very unfair. Please know there is nothing you did to cause these ectopic pregnancies, and sadly nothing we can do to prevent them.

Please look after yourself, and know that we are here for you for as long as you need.

With good wishes,

Michele

Thank you for your response Michele.

If you don’t mind me asking, were your successful pregnancies through IVF or naturally?

Nicole

Hi Scrubsfan103,

I am so sorry to hear about your ectopic pregnancies. I know exactly what you are going through, I also had two ectopic pregnancies and I was losing hope for natural pregnancy.

With my first one i lost my left tube, 4 months later I found out I was having second ectopic pregnancy on the other side. Luckily they manage to save it with methotrexate. Like you i was also concerned about my future fertility two ectopics on both side? One tube left? What are the chances of natural pregnancy. We were thinking about IVF but we decided to try naturaly one more time and here I am due next month with our rainbow baby.

I wish there was something I could say to make you feel less worried, but I hope by telling you my story will give you some hope. I know this is what I was looking for when I was going through my ectopic pregnancies. I wish you all the best x

Hi LittleP27,

Thank you so much for your response.

I know that every situation is different but your story gives me some hope.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I wish you all the best with the rest of your pregnancy and hope you have a safe delivery

Hi Nicole,

Both of my pregnancies were natural. The first was conceived about 14 months after the 2nd ectopic. I needed the time to emotionally heal and make some changes to my stress level. The second was 7 1/2 years later - and very unexpected!!

After the second ectopic, I had very little hope. I had very few answers. I started considering life without children, thinking about adoption, IVF, etc.

During the first pregnancy, I held my breath the entire time. I was happy with one child for so long, that I didn’t even contemplate a second. The first ectopic took my tube, the second ruptured my uterus. I did not ever think two children were possible.

I share this all, not to say it will be the same for you, but there is so much about pregnancy that is unexplainable and we don’t know what the future holds. Be kind to yourself.

Sending many good wishes,

Michele

Hi Michele,

Thanks for your response.

I am sorry that you experienced two ectopic pregnancies but am happy to know that you went on to have two successful pregnancies.

I am eager to try again but am worried about another ectopic. I will look into seeing if I can do an exploratory laparoscopy to check my tubes before I try again in a few months.
