When to try again if you have irregular periods?

Hi there,

I was just after some advice please! I came off the pill August 2018 to try and get my body back to normal for my husband and I to try for a baby. Between August and now I have only had 2 periods - one in October and one in January. I found out I was pregnant on 3rd April and on the 9th April found out the pregnancy was ectopic and had ruptured so I needed emergency surgery and my left tube was removed.

I’ve read that you should wait 2/3 cycles or periods until trying again, however if my periods aren’t regular then how do I know when to start trying again??

Any help/advice would be much appreciated, thank you!

Dear Lucyol19,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

Regarding conceiving again, we and many medical professionals advise waiting for two menstrual cycles. It is important to allow time for your body to recover and emotions to surface and be worked through. This is so that you have some comfort that your body is returning to its natural rhythm and you have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - key information in checking you are not suffering from an ectopic pregnancy in the future. The first bleed soon after surgery for ectopic pregnancy is not classed as a period as it is the body’s response to falling hormone levels. It would not matter if your periods are regular or irregular, we would still advise to wait until you have had 2 periods until trying to conceive.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Am so sorry for your loss. All hormonal contraceptives affect your fertility hormone cycles thus the irregular period. Your periods are more likely to normalize after the surgery. My doctor said you can ttc after the first period.no need to wait for 2or 3 cycles unles you want to wait if you dint have open abdominal surgery. Hope all goes well for you .
