Hi everyone, I was hoping you might be able to shed some light for me - do you know what the standard protocol is for doctors when a lady with a previous ectopic becomes pregnant again? Are there standard tests that have to be done (e.g. HCG/early scans?) or is it more informal and based around how the patient wants/is feeling e.g. pain/bleeding?
I had a suspected ectopic in June but it was never confirmed and it cleared itself early on. It did hurt from very early on! I kept the tube. Now I am pregnant again, no pain/problems/bleeding. I completely understand the seriousness of ectopic pregnancies and also that most people probably want the reassurance of additional early scans etc. But I just wondered what the standard approach was - if there is one!
Thanks
Naomi
Hi Naomi,
I would go to your GP/ early pregnancy unit and demand you have an early scan or something. I had an Ectopic pregnancy only 6 weeks ago, they also had to remove my right tube. They told me as soon as I know I’m pregnant again to call them for an early scan.
I will be doing so as I’ve had quite a few problems in the past so I’m not taking any risks in the future.
Wish you the best of luck
Annie xx
Thanks Annie. I am actually a little too early for a scan to pick anything up yet. I understand what you’re saying though and am sure many people feel the same.
I suppose I am wondering whether there is a standard approach that docs follow across the NHS for post-ectopic pregnancies, or whether it just depends where you are, how you are feeling etc etc.
Thanks
Naomi
Hi Naomi,
I’m really not sure if there is a standard procedure. Sometimes I loose all faith in the NHS system as they haven’t been that helpful to me in the past.
I’m not feeling great to be honest, I’m very low and tearful. Right now I can’t see past what happened to me 6 weeks ago, I just want a family so bad and it’s not happening.
My hormones are probably still all over the place plus I’ve just had my first period since the Ectopic.
How many weeks do you think you are?
Annie xx
Oh you poor thing. Yes I found my hormones to be a little off for a good 6-8 weeks after.
I have two close friends who have had ectopics, both have had a tube removed, both have children now. I fell pregnant v quickly after (I am 5 weeks now) and so did they. Just hope this one had sat nav !!
Hope you start feeling better soon.
Hi! I called my epu at 5 wks. Booked me in for scan at 7wks so they could confirm all ok and heartbeat. That was last Thursday. Now just waiting for midwife call and the 12wk dating scan referral. They didn’t take bloods. Only the scan and didn’t get much info from them. Had emergency surgery on rupture a week after methotrexate shot so I was classed high risk. They told me to call. Yet the sonographer still had to chip in before my scan they didn’t usually take self referrals without midwife or gp. So I felt super crap by her saying that as if id done wrong. Wish I could have recorded the December consultant/nurse guidance talk to prove I was doing what I was told. Hey ho! Human nature. Not everyone can be super nice in their profession. Always get the odd grumpy sod. Hope scan goes ok. X
