Pregnant after ectopic

Apologies I am re-posting this as just notice that where I had originally posted hasn’t been active in awhile.

I had an ectopic pregnancy last July. My tube ruptured on the first day of my missed period so it was an a very early stage (4 weeks). I had surgery on the same day and unfortunately I lost the tube.

I had a hcg procedure earlier this month and am now pregnant- today is the first day of my missed period. I am thrilled but very anxious. I have booked in for an early scan at 6.5 weeks but it is a long wait- the nurse said that anything earlier would likely be inconclusive.

Should I get my GP to do bloods in the meantime.?

Any advice appreciated.

Dear wishonastar,

Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy,

After an ectopic pregnancy, finding we are pregnant again can be a mix of emotions and I can completely understand your feeling nervous. It is perfectly normal to feel scared after the ordeal you have endured. My mind started racing and I was only really able to relax to some degree after my early scan. It is a nerve-wracking time and you have friends here who understands how you are feeling.

It is not usual for hCG testing to be completed as in isolation, hCG tests only provide a part of the picture - declining levels indicate that a pregnancy has ended and will be miscarried. It can also possibly indicate an ectopic pregnancy that is “self-resolving”. Also hCG levels rising by less than 66% over 48 hours means it is likely (but not certain) that it is ectopic. If levels rise normally, they suggest the pregnancy is implanted in the uterus. You may see from this that hCG levels only indicate certain possibilities and are not in themselves a definitive guide. A positive identification of an implanted embryo on a scan is usually needed before a final diagnosis/certainty that the pregnancy has implanted in the uterus.

Speaking from UK medical practice and standards, usually doctors carry out an internal transvaginal scan at around six weeks with subsequent pregnancies after an ectopic. This is because there is a reasonable chance of seeing an embryo around this six week mark.

Whilst I do not wish to alarm you, I sadly have to remind you that if you experience any unusual bleeding, abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain, bladder or bowel problems or feel dizzy and unwell to seek urgent medical advice.

Sending much love and positive thoughts,

Karen x

I live in the US. I’m 5 weeks. My doctor’s nurse was going to schedule me for a normal ultrasound a month from now! I asked her about doing blood work or something to ensure it’s not ectopic again. So she sent in the blood work orders and said I could go get it done whenever I wanted. I did just log into my Health Portal and my OBGYN has ordered me progesterone and “HCG QUANTITATIVE PREGNANCY.” I just want to make sure I’m an advocate for my health and my baby’s health.

Dear 4Narnia,

Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy,

As we are a UK based charity. I’m afraid we can only comment on common practice here in the UK.

Speaking from UK medical practice and standards, usually doctors carry out an internal transvaginal scan at around six weeks with subsequent pregnancies after an ectopic. This is because there is a reasonable chance of seeing an embryo around this six week mark.

If you are concerned about the tests your Dr has organised, I would speak to them.

Whilst I do not wish to alarm you, if you experience any unusual bleeding, abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain or feel dizzy and unwell, please seek urgent medical advice.

Sending much love,

Hi hun

I was just just wondering if there was any update from you and if youve had your scan as yet?

I had an ectopic pregnancy in November last year and I got a positive test last week - I am booked in for an early scan on the 15th Feb (should be around 6 weeks then) and like you it just feels absolutely light years away. I feel like I just want to know it’s in the right place - I feel that whatever happens is going to happen and I can face that, I just want to know it’s in the right place. Does that sound strange?

Keeping my fingers crossed for you

Lucy xx

Hi Lucy

We are obviously very close in terms of timing. I’m doing okay. My scan is scheduled for 14 February so anxiously waiting for that date. It has been a nerve wrecking time and I’m just hoping that everything is as it should be. fingers crossed we both get good news next week.x

Hi ladies,

I had an ectopic just over 18 months ago and had my right tube out. i found out i am pregnant 2 days ago, I am so anxious and just want to know if ts in the right place. I have had some light bleeding but i went to hospital yesterday to get some checks done as i was worried they said it could just be implantation bleeding but my emotions are everywhere. Ive got a scan on thursday so fingerscrossed we see it in the right place i cant be 25 and have no tubes- I hope both your scans went well! xxx

Hello all of you,

So sorry to post so randomly, but hoping that your scans were ok - I’m quite close to you date-wise (in the grand scheme of things - at this point a day or a week seems like FOREVER!!) and just driving myself crazy with every twinge and ache in that general region. My scan isn’t for another 1-2 weeks - don’t know how you managed the wait - any tips greatly appreciated!

Wishing you all so much luck.

Hi all and sorry I didn’t reply sooner. I’m delighted to be able to give the update that the 6 scan confirmed that the pregnancy is in my uterus, a heartbeat was detected and there is no risk of an ectopic. The scan was obviously very reassuring but I’m still extremely anxious and like other posters and very conscious of every twinge and/or feeling. I know I should feel elated (and don’t get me wrong I am so grateful) but instead my mood is low.

I am hoping that as the weeks go by the anxiety and worry will fade. At the moment, I can’t help but feel that something is going to go wrong.

I hope everyone else is doing okay and get positive news.

That’s fabulous news wishonastar!

So sorry that you’re still so worried, but everything crossed for you, and that’s incredibly reassuring from an ectopic point of view. And every day is one day closer to lower risk and meeting your lovely babe.

Xxxxxxxx

Thank you so much. It really is a huge relief. Fingers and toes crossed that your scan also brings good news. In the meantime, just take it one day at a time and try not to worry too much.x

So chuffed for you!

I am currently 6 weeks after an ectopic in November. My EPU wouldn’t book me in until 7 weeks :frowning: So I have another week of worrying!

I’m struggling with the waiting…

Hope you’re feeling a bit more positive wish, and that time is helping.

Wishing you all the luck in the world Smay88 - hoping for a happy little intrauterine bean. Xxx
