Hi all
I’m after some advice, hoping that someone can advise me.
I had a miscarriage back in August 2015, found out at the 13 week scan there was no heartbeat. We were heartbroken and had a d&c procedure. I then fell pregnant again in February this year, this resulted in PUL and I had one shot of methotrexate. After waiting 3 months and 2 cycles we have been trying again this month, my last 2 periods were normal cycle 28-30 days. Since we have been trying again I was hopeful when my period was a few days late in hope that I might be pregnant, 2 tests later and both tests negative. Whilst I am disappointed I am also frustrated and upset that my period is nearly 1 week late, where is it? And why since this month we have been trying that now my period is irregular?
I’m 38 and TTC #2, I have a fantastic 5 year old and just want to complete my family.
Any advice or anyone that can relate to this would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Jo x
Dear middlemiss-03-jo,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss and the troubling time you are now experiencing.
Trying to conceive again can be a challenging time for couples especially after experiencing loss and I truly understand how you feel.
Following an ectopic pregnancy, it can be quite common for periods to take a while to reestablish themselves into a rhythm which is more normal for us and I understand how incredibly frustrating this can be.
You mention that your period is a week late, I am not medically trained so cannot provide any definitive answers as to why this has happened but periods can be delayed for a number of reasons including stress or even (as surprising as it may sound) excessive exercise or weight loss. Doctors normally consider menstrual cycles of between 23-42 days to be within normal parameters.
Making the decision to begin trying to conceive is an emotional rollercoaster compounded by our sad loss. You are not alone in experiencing your feelings of frustration. We here emotional support whenever you need us.
Sending much love,
Karen x

I am at a very healthy time of my life, I don’t drink alcohol, I’ve cut out caffeine and my mental health is kept sane by seeing a therapist each week (lots of emotions linked to ectopic and ms) ! I have never felt better or ready so when all of a sudden and for the first time in my life is my period a week late, and when this is the first month of trying.
I have found great support mentally and physically in my yoga practice.
I’m trying to keep positive but now I’m worries that my periods have gone irregular? We are looking into booking a private appointment with a fertility specialist so maybe this is a step in the right direction?
Good luck to all trying, and on a fertility journey xx
Sorry to hear all you’ve been through.
I’ve no insight into why, but just wanted to tell you the same happened to me, and then I was pregnant a few months after that (and still am - 32 weeks along today). I had a miscarriage in September 2014, then an ectopic in February 2015, which was dealt with with MTX and then surgery. My periods were always fairly regular, and had gone back to a very regular 28-29 day cycle again after the ectopic. We started TTC in May of 2015, and then in September, my period was 6 days late for no reason. We were away for the weekend, and I thought for sure I was pregnant, only to get a negative test, then another, then my period came. So that cycle was 34 days, then the next was 31, and I think the next was 31 as well. The month after that, I got pregnant, so I’m not sure what would have happened, if my cycle changed, or if it would have gone back to 28-29 days.
So, not sure that helps at all, but I’m also very healthy, active, etc., and had never had a late period before that other than pregnancy. So, you’re not alone. I think the ectopics can throw our cycles for a loop sometimes. I hope you get a BFP soon!
Hi Lily
Thank you so much for your reply, and congrats at your lovely pregnancy news. I loved reading that you are now pregnant after suffering too.
I guess I can only look forward and be positive, and wait for my period to arrive. I think I am too quick to think everything was ‘back to normal’ after just 2 cycles.
Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
