Hi to all you amazing ladies,
I wanted to come on and share my story after what started as a dark year has turned out amazing with all the other crazy things that are going on in the world at the moment.
My husband and I have been together almost 9 years and last year finally started to try for a baby, I fell pregnant in February this year and in mid March at almost 7 weeks pregnant, we had the news we had been dreading. It was an ectopic pregnancy, after I had been bleeding and cramping from week 4. We had ups and downs while waiting to be able to have a scan at 6 weeks and even at that point, the scan was inconclusive, it was only when I started to feel shoulder tip pain in my right arm that I as admitted to hospital. On Friday 13th March, when I should have been boarding a plane to go on my close friends hen party to Edinburgh, I was being prepped for emergency surgery. As a result from this surgery, my right fallopian tube was removed and I started the process of healing both physically and emotionally.
I found this really difficult and was so anxious to start trying again as I longed to be pregnant and couldn’t understand why this had happened to me when loads of my family and friends were having healthy pregnancies around me. On top of this, We went into lockdown 5 days after my surgery and were unable to leave our home unless for 5 essential reasons.
We were told by the consultant that we could try again after my first period but I searched for hope and found this wonderful web page and forum. Here I was told they recommended I waited until having 2 periods post surgery to ensure I had healed both inside and out. I spent hours reading the information, emailing the amazing ladies who run this page and taking in everyone’s stories. Most of all, I found hope in reading the positive stories where women went on to have healthy pregnancies and babies after their ectopic.
Now it is my turn, me and my husband were so so so lucky that I fell pregnant the first month we were able to try again. I am now 24 weeks pregnant! I was anxious to reach this week before posting my story as this is the ‘viability’ week, or so I have been told!! So keep your heads up ladies and stay strong. You can and will do this!!
Sending you all love and positive thoughts during these difficult and uncertain times!!
Lots of love
Steph xx

Thank you for sharing this ! You made me cry and gave me hope ‘ thank you for the follow up. I just had my 1st period after surgery so waiting to the second one to try out. But I think I need this time to get my anxiety under control as I am a mess. Thanks again for a positive news !
Hey ladies! Why is it a 2 period wait? My consultant also told me 1 period is enougu because they can date the pregnancy from that period- why is it recommended to wait for 2?
Dear sunflower,
We and many healthcare professionals advise to wait for two full menstrual cycles (periods) after surgery or expectant management, before trying to conceive, to allow time for the body to heal physically and you to heal emotionally.
We have more details on our website here which you may find useful.
