Start TTC after surgery?

After several blood test, and three scan I finally got diagnosed with ectopic pregnancy. On the last scan, there was some fluid and an egg was seen in one of the tubes, so it was assumed that my tube had ruptured.

A laparoscopy was then decided. When I woke up my surgeon told me that the surgery went great and that both tubes looked healthy and they couldn’t find the pregnancy anymore. So in the end, they just drained the fluid and closed me up.

After being asked, my surgeon told me that pending i feel good I could start TTC as soon as my hcg are back to 0 (by 3 weeks).

Is this correct? I keep reading everywhere that I need to wait 2/3 cycles?

Thanks

Hi B00070399,

I’m so sorry to hear you have gone through this experience. An ectopic pregnancy is an emotional and physical trauma and it can leave us with many questions. Unfortunately, I’m not medically qualified and can not comment on your particular situation.

However, in regards to trying to conceive, the Trust advises couples to wait at least two full menstrual cycles or three months before trying to conceive again. This is to allow time for your body to heal and emotions to surface and be worked through. However, you can start taking folic acid now. It is recommended to take folic acid for at least 12 weeks prior to conception.

I would also encourage you to ask any outstanding questions of your GP and surgeon. Sometimes after our procedures it is difficult to register what has occurred. Only later do we wonder what the exact procedure was that occurred. It might offer you additional details and insight.

We understand how nerve-wracking this all can be. These Boards are a safe space, and we here for as long as you need.

With good wishes,

Michele

Hi. My surgeon also told me I could start trying again as soon as I feel physically and emotionally ready and that there is no need to wait.
