Folic acid

Hi all

I’ve had surgery for an ectopic pregnancy following the failure of methotrexate, when am I able to start taking folic acid again

Thank you

HI Jtaylor222,

I’m so sorry to hear you have suffered an ectopic pregnancy and loss. While I’m not medically qualified to comment on your specific situation, I wanted to share the Trust’s guidance on ttc after MTX. If you have had either one or two injections of methotrexate, you should wait until your hCG levels have fallen to below 5mIU/mL (your doctor will advise you when this is through blood or urinary tests) and then take a folic acid supplement for 12 weeks before you try to conceive.

The Trust has more information at: https://ectopic.org.uk/physical-recover … eive-again

Following surgery, the Trust advises couples to wait at least two full menstrual cycles or three months before trying to conceive again. This allows time for your body to heal and emotions to surface and be worked through. However, you can start taking folic acid now. Taking folic acid for at least 12 weeks before conception is recommended.

Please know that you have a supportive environment here for as long as you need. We are here for you any time.

With good wishes,

Michele
