3 month wait post methotrexate

Hi everyone,

I had the methotrexate injection on January 30th. My doctor said to wait 12 weeks to conceive. For me this works out to April 23rd.

I am expecting to ovulate on April 4th, and I am wondering if we conceived on that day would it be safe?

By my math the baby wouldn’t even implant until around my 12 week mark so would that be ok?

Hi Magical Cupcake,

I’m so sorry that you’ve suffered an ectopic pregnancy and loss. It can leave us with many questions, and I’ll do my best to help.

In regards to trying to conceive, the Trust advises couples to wait at least two full menstrual cycles or three months before trying to conceive again. This is to allow time for your body to heal and emotions to surface and be worked through. However, you can start taking folic acid now. It is recommended to take folic acid for at least 12 weeks prior to conception. We specify this timeframe following MTX treatment because of the way the drug works. It is a folate antagonist and levels could be affected because of the way MTX works. If a woman doesn’t take folic acid supplements for 12 weeks after MTX, it could affect the development of the embryo. However, it is important to be emotionally ready for TTC, and this can take additional time.

As I’m not medically qualified, I can not advise on the decision to TTC before the 12-week timeframe. You may want to follow up with your medical team to be sure.

With good wishes,

Michele
