Planning for pregnancy post surgery

Hi there,

My husband and I were trying to conceive for 2.5 years when we finally found out we were pregnant (naturally) - 4 weeks. Unfortunately, 2 days later, I had severe pain in my side. We discovered the pregnancy was ectopic and the embryo had embedded and ruptured my left Fallopian tube, which they removed alongside a cyst on my right ovary.

Does anybody know how long you should wait before TTC post keyhole surgery? Also, I was undergoing fertility exploration prior to falling pregnant and about to be referred to the fertility clinic - even though our baby was never in the womb, will I be ineligible for IVF on the NHS?

Dear Hannaht1234,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss,

We and many medical professionals advise waiting for two menstrual cycles. It is important to allow time for your body to recover and emotions to surface and be worked through. This is so that you have some comfort that your body is returning to its natural rhythm and you have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - key information in checking you are not suffering from an ectopic pregnancy in the future. The first bleed soon after surgery for ectopic pregnancy is not classed as a period as it is the body’s response to falling hormone levels.

I would discuss eligibility for IVF with your Dr as different areas have differing criteria for funded IVF cycles.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Thank you so much for this. At what point is it recommended to start taking Pregnacare pre-conception vitamins again? I feel like I was discharged from the hospital without enough information about it.

Dear Hannah1234,

The only restriction on taking pre pregnancy vitamins is if you have had a methotraxate injection as treatment for ectopic pregnancy.

As you didn’t have this, you can start taking pre pregnancy vitamins whenever you like.

The NHS website states you should take folic acid suppliments whist you are TTC until you are 12 weeks pregnant.
