Question for an admin / ectopic rep

I’ve been reading through your leaflets online particularly regarding contraception. You have more up to date info than many of the doctors and gynaes. Whilst I do have an ill placed fibroid I suspect my ectopic was caused by taking the 5 day morning after pill on day 4 (if you get pregnant on the MA pill there is a 1/20 chance it’s ectopic, I now know, and this obliviously increases the longer distance you take it from conception).

Anyhow due to weight I’m ineligible for the combined pill and am currently using cerazette pop with awareness that should it not work, there is another risk of ectopic.

What id like to know is, do the studies supersede taking the pill? Ie if you stop taking a POP, does the impact and increased risk of the POP remain or go back to normal?

I was advised by my consultant to take the pill once I’d reached non pregnant hcg as not ttc. I am experiencing however pain, mostly left side but sometimes right. I think this time I did ovulate.

Is there any recommendation re: having clear cycles before starting contraception for those NOT trying to conceive? Could the cramping bc blood/tissue prevented from coming out?!

Thanks in advance

Dear EctopicPUL,

Sadly we are not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your query.

As far as I am aware, there is no need to wait for a period before starting contraception, especially if you are having intercourse.

Although there are known risk factors for ectopic pregnancy, and the progesterone only pill is on the list, it is a very minimal risk and many women, including myself experience ectopic pregnancy without any of the risk factors.

I would suggest talking through your options with your GP or family planning clinic who will have access to your medical notes and be able to advise you appropriately.

Sending much love,

Karen x
