I had surgery to remove an ectopic pregnancy in my right tube just 6 weeks ago. I feel that I am recovering well, both physically and emotionally, and we had decided to wait the recommended 3 months / 2 cycles before trying to conceive again.
However, last night our contraception method failed, and I am now super worried that I could be pregnant again. Whilst this is ultimately what I want, I don’t want to risk my body not being properly healed, and so have been to the GP who has prescribed the morning after pill.
I am at a total loss as to whether to go ahead and take this or not, it feels so at odds to what I want (which is to be pregnant) but equally I don’t want to ruin our next attempt by it being too soon.
Any advice much appreciated, either from people who have been in similar situations and gone on to take the morning after pill, or not. Just anxious that the morning after pill may cause further disruptions to my cycles so feel that I properly want to understand the implications of this.
So sorry you have suffered an ectopic pregnancy and so sorry you have found yourself in this dilemma. It must feel terrible!
Did the GP give you a point of view?
You are, correct that the morning after pill can affect your cycle. After taking the emergency contraceptive pill, most women will have a normal period at the expected time. However, there is a chance you may have your period later or earlier than normal, typically not more than 7 days late.
The short term disruption (if any) would be happening at a time when you do not want to be getting pregnant because of your body healing internally so you would not be disrupting your chances of trying to conceive after 12 weeks post ectopic. Some studies have also found an increased risk of a subsequent Ectopic pregnancy in those who conceive immediately after an EP.
You must do what feels right for you but, unless the GP suggested anything to the contrary as he has full access to your medical records, there is no reason why you cannot safely take the pill and then try to conceive as normal without affecting your chances in the near future.
Hi sorry about your ectopic I myself had one this December with the removal of my right tube. The gyno had told me I could try straight away. You will know how your body is recovering and not only physically but mentally. wish you all the best x
