Hello,
I just had my af after about 8 weeks of having an ectopic. We have been advised by more than one doctors to wait for at least two cycles post ectopic before we start ttc, though one said I could start trying after the first period itself. However, I also have PCOS and my doc has asked me to take contraceptive pill for 2-3 cycles before we start trying.
While this is a usual treatment for PCOS but given my situation I wanted to check if anyone here has heard anything against it? Is it okay to take the hormone after ectopic and a couple of months before trying again? I would definitely want to ready my body and if this helps my ovaries I would take it…but just want to know from anyone here who has heard anything about it??
Help much appreciated!! Thank you!
Dear Polkadots
I’m sorry to hear you have had an ectopic pregnancy. Your doctor is best placed to advise on what is best for your situation with PCOS. However, just to say that even for women without PCOS medical professionals advise you wait for three months or two full menstrual cycles (periods) before trying to conceive. This allows your cycle to return and there to be a clear Last Menstrual Period (LMP) date to date a new pregnancy from. It also allows the internal inflammation and bruising from the ectopic to heal.
If you have had Methotrexate you should wait until your hCG levels have fallen to below 5mIU/mL and then take a folic acid supplement for 12 weeks before you try to conceive. This is because the Methotrexate may have reduced the level of folate in your body which is needed to ensure a baby develops healthily.
So it does not sound unusual to be asked to use some form of contraception in this time. There is a type of contraceptive pill which makes an ectopic pregnancy more likely - the ‘mini-pill’ (progesterone-only pill). This alters the motility of the tube i.e. the ability for an egg to move through it. However, given your history it is unlikely your doctor would be prescribing this.
Wishing you much love

Dear Beth, thanks for replying. Helps a lot…
I wanted to check if you have heard of Myo Inositol. It helps in ovulation (specially in women with PCOD who don’t ovulate) and improving the quality of egg. I fell pregnancy within the first month of taking it.
So if it has similar effect as clomid…does this mean that this could also be a risk factor for ectopic (like clomid)?
hi ladies am Joanne and have also suffered an ectopic pregnancy…I had to get the methatrexate injection and am currently awaiting my first period… How long does this usually take ladies? I have been advised to go onto the contraceptive pill for two cycles a d can’t wait to begin to TTC again!!!

Hi Joanne…sorry to hear about your ectopic. I was managed expectantly, so no methotrexate. It took about 1 month for my hcg to come down to normal and another month for my af to arrive. Usually we are advised to wait for 3 months before we can start ttc…gives the body enough time to recover. I have read with one methotrexate injection one should ideally wait for 6 months for the effect to leave the body. The time should also help in calming down after such a horrifying experience.
I know the wait seems so long… I hope you get your af soon… take care ! Xoxo
I did an ovulation test today and according to it I am ovulating so at least I know my period is imminent…I’ve already started back on my pre natal vitamins as I’ve been feeling very run down after the methotrexate and the bleeding…
Good good for you! I can tell you from experience that you will feel much relaxed after your first af…It helps to know your body is falling back in its natural rhythm.
Thumbs up on taking the vitamins…I started a bit late but they are super helpful.
Yes I will relax once I get it…at least I know my body is doing what it should be…scared tho!!
