Pregnant after 2 ectopics

I had 2 ectopic pregnancies in the past, one in my left tube and the other in my right around 6 years ago. I was 27 at that time. Both of them were treated with methotrexate. I was terrified and concluded that both my tubes were no good and stopped trying and decided to try living a life without children. My friend recently had a baby and playing with him made me want to give it just one more chance. Today I am 4 weeks 3 days pregnant. I have a scan booked at exactly 6 weeks. I feel a dull ache on my right side(pretty sure I ovulated from the right) that resembles ovulation pain. I also have back pain only on the right side. I also have very mild period like cramps. I am kind of certain it is an ectopic again. I have 10 more days to go and the wait is really killing me.

Thanks for all the help and support you guys provide. You are doing an amazing job! I used to visit this forum 6 years ago and it definitely helped me get through my ectopic pregnancies.

Hello

I am 5 weeks pregnant today. I have been unable to go for HCG blood tests as I tested positive for covid. Is this not an option for you to see whether this is something you can have done?

I too was treated for left side ectopic in June this year with methotrexate. I feel some aching in my left hip which travels round to my lower back. I also have some pain in my thigh on and off. Also experiencing some cramping but not very often.

I’m told that aches and pains after ectopic pregnancies is normal so thats what I am trying to focus on until I get some answers. Hopefully we both go on to have successful pregnancies!

Hi,

I am so sorry you got COVID at this time. This period is difficult by itself. I hope you recovering quickly from COVID and are able to get back to doing your bloods soon. Don’t let COVID get in your way of seeking treatment.

Here we are not able to get private blood tests done. I can go to an urgent care center and they would do a blood test to confirm my pregnancy but I can get a maximum of 2 blood tests through them. I am saving them for after 5 weeks. It would be nice to take some data with me to the doctor on the day of the scan. It would be great if my doctor prescribed me serial HCGs but it was very hard to directly contact her and request them. Also, my last pregnancy, I got bloods done every other day and it doubled perfectly every 2 days and still turned out ectopic. :frowning:

I really hope all our pains and aches are because we are too aware and are noticing every little thing. Thinking of having a successfully pregnancy makes me very happy. Adding you to my thoughts and prayers. Really hoping our scans go well.

Dear cuddles,

Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy,

I certainly felt twinges when I next fell pregnant. I think we are so hyper aware of our bodies and it is only natural after experiencing previous ectopic pregnancy.

I wish I had more tips on how to make the time to quicker for you until your scan. Try to keep your mind active, books, box sets, gentle walks.

Although I do not wish to alarm you, I do have to remind you to seek urgent medical advice with any worsening pain, any bleeding or you feel dizzy and unwell. Don’t just wait on your scan with worsening symptoms.

You genuinely have friends here who understand, as you can see, and we will be here for you for as long as you need.

Sending much love and positive thoughts,

Karen x

Thank you so much for the support Karen. I really appreciate it.

This may sound stupid and me being hyper aware but I have to say it. I am thinking I am ectopic pregnant on the right side. I am right handed so anything that requires force, like pushing a tight door, cutting carrots, relatively sudden brakes when I am driving or simply standing on my right leg (alone) makes me feel light pressure on my right pelvic area. Doing the same with my left does not. I so hope and pray I am wrong. But if there is anyone else who felt this way and later had a normal pregnancy or an ectopic pregnancy please reply and let me know.

Reading books is a good idea. I have to find something super interesting that keeps me from thinking about the pregnancy being ectopic. I will do bloods next week and try to be hopeful about the scan. I will update here as soon as I find out.

Thanks again for your support!

Just an update…I had a scan yesterday (Monday) and it was inconclusive. They didn’t find anything in the uterus or tubes. They followed with blood work which I believe they should have done before the scan. My hcg was 900 yesterday. That is probably why they didnt see anything. I have another blood test tomorrow (Wednesday) and then a scan with my obgyn the on Thursday. I am hoping the numbers will be high enough to see something by then.

On the scan, they found a dominant follicle on my right ovary. I am assuming that is the corpus luteum cyst? I do have a dull ache on the right side from almost 10 days but it does not bother me enough to do anything about it. I am thinking it may be because of this.

I am very nervous and hoping for the best.

Dear Cuddles,

It could well be too early to see anything on the scan. This happened to myself, it was a nerve wracking time and you have friends here who understand.

As you have mentioned twinges, this certainly can be normal during early stages of pregnancy, but I do have to remind you to seek urgent medical advice with any worsening pain or you develop bleeding or feel dizzy and unwell.

You should get more information from subsequent blood tests and scanning and I am sending lots more positive thoughts,

Hi Cuddles,

Wishing you all the best for your scan tomorrow and hope the bloods went well today.

You mentioned your hcg double ling every 2 days with your previous ectopic - did you have any other symptoms that indicated it was ectopic? And how far along were you?

Thanks,

Laura

Karen,

Thanks for all the positive thoughts and love. Going to need them tomorrow. It is really nice to talk to someone who actually understands how it feels. Thanks again.

Laura,

Thank you so very much for the best wishes. I am waiting on the bloods. I hope they come in before the scan tomorrow so we can get a better idea of what to expect on the scan.

With my last ectopic, the levels doubled nicely till the day of of my scan that was at 5 weeks 4 days. Everything was good till the scan. The scan found nothing in the uterus and a sac and yolk in my left tube. The hcg was at 2000. After the scan, I started bleeding and the levels stopped doubling. My only other symptom was one sided lower backache.

Good luck to you with your journey as well.

So I had my 6 week scan with my obgyn and she could not see anything anywhere. My levels were around 2300. Made me do bloods again the next day and sent me for another ultrasound with better machines. Bloods rose well but again nothing on ultrasound. I guess the doctor is going to conclude this as ectopic.

I have read some forums where people see nothing at 3000 and then they see a heartbeat a week or two later. I wish I could wait like them to find out by my history of 2 ectopics makes this very risky.

Something should have been seen in the uterus at this point is what I feel.

Waiting on the doctor’s call to make a decision.

After a long discussion with my doctor, it was decided that I am getting the methotrexate shot tomorrow. One reason because my hcg levels rose very little (10%)which makes my doctor think that the pregnancy is ectopic or not viable. The second reason nothing being visible on ultrasound at 3000 hcg.

Writing my story here helped me get through this tough time. Whenever I read posts here, I look forward to reading a happy ending. I always wanted to write a positive story here but I am not giving up. Since they actually did not confirm the location of my pregnancy, I am going to believe it may have been in the uterus and I am going try again and I hopefully have a positive story for you all the next time.

Thanks for your support and good luck to everyone with their journeys.

Sending lots of love and hugs your way, had been keeping everything crossed for you. I know a positive story will be possible for you and can’t wait to read it. Take good care of yourself. Xxxx

Dear cuddles,

I am so sorry to be reading this. My heart goes out to you and I’m sending the warmest of hugs.

We will be here for you for as long as you need,

Another update, Unlike my first two ectopic pregnancies, the methotrexate did not work this time. The numbers were not going down and they did surgery and removed my right tube. The surgeon said the ends of my tube were stuck. He also looked at my left tube and said its ends look stuck as well. So now since I have had ectopics from both sides and one is removed and the other appears damaged, the doctor has told me it is almost certain I will have a 4th ectopic if I try again. They told me to try IVF.

My emotions are all over the place. I dont think I am mentally strong enough to deal with IVF.

I guess I will give it a few months. But I strongly feel IVF isnt for me…neither am I able to give up on my dream of having children.

I’m so sorry to hear what you’ve had to go through, it sounds really tough. :disappointed: Makes sense, as you say, to give yourself some time to process it all.

Sending all the hugs xxxx

Dear Cuddles,

I am so sorry to hear this news.

I would just very and recover from the surgery before making any set decisions on IVF.

It is a choice only you and your partner can make, but I would gently suggest leaving it a good few months before even starting to think about it. Surgery is a huge ordeal and you are in the early stages of recovery. Your body needs time to heal from your surgery which is in itself a gruelling task. You have also had to process the loss of your baby and been through an immense rollercoaster of emotions - all of this will take time to come to terms with.

Above all, be kind to yourself and allow time to grieve, to heal both physically and emotionally.

Sending much love and warm hugs,

Karen x
