Pregnant 4 weeks after ectopic!?

Hi all,

This is my first time posting on any sort of forum so hope it’s ok!

I was diagnosed with an Ectopic pregnancy in my right tube on the 6th November. By the 8th Novemeber my body had started to nautrually deal with it and I was told that expectant management would be ok and surgery etc not needed (I feel very lucky about this).

I had bloods taken on the 8th and my Hcg levels had dropped from well over 1,000 to 900. The following week it was just 36 and the week after down to 2. I was discharged and all was fine. The following day I experienced some pain on my right side that lasted all day. I can only describe it similarly to ovulation pain. I know that the bleed i had starting on the 8th wasn’t a period but if I had been I would have been ovulating around the time I had the pain. My cycles have always been 28/29 days and very regular. Me and my partner have not been careful.

Today is the day my period is due, the last couple of days I’ve had similar symptoms to my pregnancy with my son who is 18 months so I’ve taken a test and it’s positive!

My question is, is this deffinitley a new pregnancy or is there any way it could be from the ectopic pregnancy still? I know we haven’t followed the general advice of waiting 2 cycles. Don’t want to get my hopes up and am scared at the same time.

Thank-you and sorry for such a long post.

Dear MissSLP,

I am sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss and the worries you are having now. I can understand your having concerns and this is perfectly normal after everything you have been through recently.

With your hCG levels getting down to two, this wouldn’t commonly show on a home urine pregnancy test.

It is unlikely that your hCG has risen due to the ectopic pregnancy you have just experienced as your levels reduced to pre pregnancy levels, however as I am not medically trained, I cannot give you a definitive answer on this question.

Given your recent ectopic pregnancy, I would strongly advise speaking to your GP as soon as possible. They maybe able to organise serial hCG blood tests to see if and how your hCG levels are rising.

Sadly I do have to remind you to seek urgent medical advice if you experience any unusual bleeding, abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain, bladder or bowel problems or feel dizzy and unwell.

While I do not want to alarm you and I hope you don’t mind my mentioning gently that we and many medical professionals advise waiting for two menstrual cycles. It is important to allow time for your body to recover and emotions to surface and be worked through. This is so that you have some comfort that your body is returning to its natural rhythm and you have a last menstrual period date from which to date a new pregnancy - key information in checking you are not suffering from an ectopic pregnancy in the future.

Sending much love and positive thoughts,

Karen x
