Ovulation pain after MTX

Hi all,

I suffered ectopic pregnancy in July 2017 and was treated successfully with Methotrexate. My levels reached 0 in about 6 weeks.

Since my ectopic, I feel ovulation pains and also sudden sharp pains on the side of ectopic. The sudden sharp stabbing pain only lasts a second and then disappears. I also feel pain on my ectopic side right before and during periods. Does anyone else have the same issue? We are not TTCing yet and I am too scared to try again as I think this pain is not normal and it could be that my tube is still damaged.

Please share your thoughts or experiences. Thanks.

Yes, I have this same exact thing! I have like an achy pain exactly where my ectopic was (on my right side), which increases before and during my period. I also will get a stabbing pain, randomly, that is very quick on my right side, in my waist. Its right under my rib cage on the side of my waist. I was treated w mtx on Sept 1, 2017. I also would like to know what these twinges of aches and stabbing pains are. Hope we get an answer!

Dear nm2808 and Lankfordsn123,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancies and losses,

Experiencing some pain after an ectopic pregnancy is normal as your body has been through a great deal. The pain may be due to your body preparing to ovulate and many women experience ovulation pain when they did not before their ectopic pregnancy - including myself. You also may have a heightened perception because of the sad loss that you have had to go through. If you find you experience offensive smelling discharge or an increased temperature of more than 37°C or just want to be checked out to be on the safe side, it would be worth asking your doctors to run tests to check for infection.

If the pain persists, I suggest keeping a pain diary noting when the pain appears, the intensity on a scale of 0-10 and anything that helps the pain eg resting, hot water bottle, paracetamol etc. Visiting your doctors with this information helps them to assess how best to manage your symptoms.

It is normal to feel anxious about the future. We experience a mix of emotions from wanting to try again to being petrified of what may lie ahead. We never forget but we can learn to accept what happened. It is a slow process that might be weeks or months ahead. In time, we can get to a place where we feel comfortable trying again. When this is, is individual for each person. There is no timeframe for recovery, take each day as it comes.

Importantly early scans avail. As soon as you know you are pregnant, contact your local EPU to inform them and book in for an early scan at around six weeks. Remind them of your previous ectopic pregnancy. This self refer route is the best route in our view. Hopefully you will have some comfort to know you are under the radar of medical professionals right away.

Making the decision to begin trying to conceive is an emotional rollercoaster compounded by our sad loss. Again, you are not alone. We here emotional support whenever you need us.

Sending much love,

Karen x

Lankfordsn123 - Im really sorry to hear about your loss. Are you TTCing? Good luck, I hope you get your rainbow soon.

Thanks nm2808! I am not, I have decided to wait until this summer to TTC. I still geel some lingering effects from the ectopic in Sept, so I really want to make sure that my body is well before I try again. I wish the best of luck to you! Thank you again for your post, its reassuring to hear that the mild “pains” I feel are more common that what my doctor seems to think.
