Ovary Pain following ectopic pregnancy

Hiii Everyone

Im new to this forum, so a bit nervous.

In August I found out that I was pregnant after trying for over 10 years and being told that I needed IVF due to having PCOS and a block tube. This exciting news quickly turned to the worst as I found out I was having a ectopic pregnancy. I had methotrexate injection in September. I have had my first period since the injection which was horrendous, However recently I have been feeling slight pain in my ovaries. Is this normal? I am very nervous as I don’t know what this means.

Dear Elisida88,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss and I truly understand what a worrying time it can be.

It is perfectly normal for your first period to be different that normal, some ladies find it is lighter and sadly some find it is heavier and more painful than normal. This should settle down into a rhythm and flow that is more normal for you in the next few months.

Experiencing some pain after an ectopic pregnancy is normal as your body has been through a great deal over the last few months. The pain may be due your body preparing to ovulate and many women experience ovulation pain when they did not before their ectopic pregnancy - including myself. You also may have a heightened perception because of the sad loss that you have had to go through. If you find you experience offensive smelling discharge or a temperature, I would advise seeking medical advice.

If the pain persists, I suggest keeping a pain diary noting when the pain appears, the intensity on a scale of 0-10 and anything that helps the pain eg resting, hot water bottle, paracetamol etc. Visiting your doctors with this information helps them to assess how best to manage your symptoms.

Unfortunately I am not medically trained so if you have continued concerns, please seek medical advice.

Sending much love,

Karen x

I had an ectopic pregnancy and had methotrexate in July, hcg levels went to 0 in September. But I’ve had on and off pain since. Usually around the time of ovulation. This week I’ve been in a lot of pain, the pain just brings all the emotions back and I’m finding it really difficult to move on.

I feel very alone not wanting to talk to anyone about it, so I’ve turned to reading all the stories on this forum which seems to be helping me at the moment. I’m the same as you, not really sure what pain is normal and when to seek medical advice. X

Thank you Very Much Karen for this information. it does make me feel a lot better xx
