Ovarian cyst after mtx

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with an ectopic about a month ago (15th May) and chose to be treated with methotrexate as opposed to surgery on 16th May. My hcg levels were roughly 2,600 on first treatment.

I had a spike on my first blood test but luckily my hcg levels have since fallen and one month after I am now at 400 ish.

However over the last few days have been experiencing extreme pain in my lower left hand side (ectopic was on the right) when I was urinating. So I called the emergency department and went in to be seen as I was worried it could be linked.

I was given internal scans and it turns out not only is the ectopic mass still there on the right (even though my hcg levels have been dropping) I also have 2 cysts, one very large and one smaller on the left ovary which is what has been causing me pain.

I had my bloods re done and it was confirmed bull my hcg was dropping ok despite there still being a mass in the right tube. However today the pain from the left hand side (ovarian cyst) has gotten worse.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced cysts as a result of treatment for an ectopic and if this is normal?

I’m also unsure as to what the next step is now, will this cyst just go in its own? At the moment this is causing me more physical pain than the actual ectopic mass is and finding it very tough mentally as it feels as though my body is just completely going against me at the moment and looks to be little hope for my reproductive system in the future (I am only 21 and desperate to one day be able to be a mum)

Many thanks

Dear oliviarachel,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss.

Unfortunately as we are a charity we are not able to provide personalised medical advice. I haven’t heard of ovarian cysts being a common side effect of methotrexate treatment, but they can develop as a result of hormones.

I have added not information here from an NHS site which may help.

I would always advise seeking medical advice if your pain or any other symptoms are worsening.

Sending much love,

Karen x
