Hey so I had a ectopic back in august. I have now just found out I’m pregnant again and I’m over the moon but petrified. In regards to my pregnancy (uk) do I need to contact anyone regarding a previous ectopic?
Dear Kayleigh,
Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy.
Following ectopic pregnancies you should have an early pregnancy scan at around 6 weeks to check the embryo is in the right place. The wait is this long as there is a reasonable chance of seeing the embryo at this time.
We therefore advise contacting your local EPU, reminding them of your ectopic pregnancy and booking an appointment. If you are unable to self refer, contact your GP who will be able to do this for you.
Sending much love and positive thoughts,
Karen x

Thank you
Unfortunately epu have told me no they aren’t doing the routine scans anymore which is so worrying now I have to wait 8 weeks to be seen
Dear Kayleigh,
I am sorry to hear you are struggling to get an early scan. It sounds as though you are in the UK. If so, your local EPU should be following NICE guidance when looking after women with a previous history of ectopic pregnancy, which in the section Follow Up After Ectopic Pregnancy states-
Advise the woman that she should inform her GP as soon a possible about any future pregnancy so that an ultrasound scan can be arranged at 6–7 weeks to establish the location and viability of the pregnancy.
I have added the full link here-
https://cks.nice.org.uk/topics/ectopic- … pregnancy/
If you wish to pursue this, you can call back your EPU or call the Patient Advice Liaison Service (PALS) department within your local hospital and ask them why they are not following NICE guidance. And no, covid is not an excuse for this.
I am sending lots of positive thoughts, but if you experience any pain or bleeding or feel dizzy and unwell, I would urge you to seek urgent medical advice.
Sending much love,
Karen x
