Hi
I am new to this forum. I had an ectopic pregnancy last September where I lost my left tube and 3 litres of blood from internal bleeding. I found out this week that I’m pregnant but understandably I’m very scared of it being ectopic and feel unable to be happy with news until I’ve had the scan.
When did people have their early pregnancy scan? My NHS Trust said I have to wait until I have my booking appointment at 8 weeks before I can have my scan which to me feels like a long time as it could be week 9 or 10 by the time I’m given a scan. Is this normal? I’m worrying every hour of the day that this pregnancy may end up badly.
What have other people’s experiences been?
Thanks for your help.
Best wishes
Lisa
Dear Lisa,
Whispered congratulations on your pregnancy, I completely understand you feeling nervous at this wait. The Trust recommends a scan at around 6 weeks as there is a reasonable chance of seeing an embryo around this time.
The hospital should be following NICE advice when looking after ladies following ectopic pregnancy and the guidance states
Advise the woman that she should inform her GP as soon a possible about any future pregnancy so that an ultrasound scan can be arranged at 6–7 weeks to establish the location and viability of the pregnancy.
If your hospital is offering outside of these guidelines, I would call and gently ask why they are not following NICE guidance at this time.
Sending much love,
Karen x

Dear Lisa,
I’m pregnant after an ectopic and booked for an appointment with midwife at 8 weeks. But the hospital said if I contact my GP, they can recommend me for an early scan. I’ve done that and booked for a 6 week scan next week at EPU. Maybe contact your GP if they could recommend you.
Thank you both for your replies. I will contact my GP. Thanks so much.
