Looking for Advice: Ectopic and HCG

Hello,

5 weeks ago when I was 6 weeks pregnant I began to get awful cramps and bleeding. I went to EPU who did a scan and could not see anything on the scan but my uterus lining was 16mm and HCG at 350. They were certain that I was having a miscarriage. I bled that week but continued to spot for 4 more weeks until I went back to the EPU last week. They confirmed scan looked consistent with a miscarriage (lining was 4mm) but my HCG has risen to 600!!! Over the last 4 days it’s dropped to 400 and then 300. A neighbour who’s a gynaecologist is pretty certain that this is an ectopic pregnancy and currently I’m undergoing expectant management. My guess is that during the 4 week where I thought the miscarriage has passed my HCG had risen higher than 600 and this was it coming down. It’s been a very confusing time and I feel that doctors are unable to really understand how I’m feeling. I get quite anxious about this stuff :frowning: I’m still bleeding currently and was wondering if anyone had experienced something similar, and if you also bled until your HCG levels came right down?

Hi Sunshine29,

I am so sorry to hear you are going through this worrying time and suffering from this early pregnancy loss. The experience can leave us with so many emotions and questions. While I’m not medically qualified to comment on your specific situation, I will do my best to help.

It’s very good that you are being looked after by the EPU, and I encourage you to continue to reach out to them for any concerns or changes. The Trust offers additional guidance on expectant management - https://ectopic.org.uk/treating-an-ecto … management. It is very important to monitor your blood levels and symptoms until you reach non-pregnant levels (hCG levels to drop below 5<mIU/mL).

As best as possible, please look after yourself and rest during this time. Early pregnancy loss is a very physical and emotional experience. These boards are filled with people who understand this experience. We are here for you whenever and for as long as you need.

With good wishes,

Michele
