I went to hospital on Tuesday night after suffering severe abdominal pain. I had known I was about 6 weeks pregnant for about a week but my sister had just had a miscarriage and I wasn’t allowing myself to get excited because I was so worried it would happen to me. I had a seizure in A&E and kept crashing so badly they rushed me into surgery early Wednesday morning. I had my left tube removed as it had ruptured so badly my whole abdomen was filled with my own blood. I later found out I lost almost 3 litres of blood that night and I was about half an hour away from losing my life. If it wasn’t for the amazing NHS staff, I would not be here today.
Everyone keeps saying they are sorry for my loss and perhaps once I have recovered physically I will start feeling sad about the loss of my pregnancy but at the moment I just feel overwhelming relief that I am still here and that I can still conceive in the future. I keep thinking that I am feeling the wrong things because everyone seems to focus on the loss of pregnancy rather than the lucky escape I had with death.
Has anyone else been through something similar? Will this loss hit me later on? Or is it normal to feel that perhaps it was a small price to pay to keep living and being able to try again?
Thank you.
Dear Rebecca,
I am so sorry to hear of everything you have been through.
When we experience ectopic pregnancy we are suddenly faced with a life threatening emergency and it’s treatment, reduction in fertility, concerns about the future and the loss of our babies. Experiencing any one of these is an ordeal, putting them together is immense and your feelings are completely normal.
You are currently dealing with the shock of processing everything and I personally felt I became more emotional once all the physical symptoms had settled.
Take each day as it comes and allow time to heal both physically and emotionally. We will be here for you for as long as you need,
Sending much love,
Karen x
