Husbands high blood pressure medication

Hi

Not sure if anyone will be able to help but we have been trying for our second baby for almost a year and had a miscarriage in dec. I have problems and so have been having acupuncture as I did to conceive our daughter.

A few wks ago my husband discovered he had dangerously high blood pressure and is now taking 10mg of amlodipine which can cause erection/sex drive problems and this seems to have happened. I have also read that because the tablets are calcium blockers they can cause problems with the sperm fertilising an egg. Does anyone have experience of their husband taking these and conceiving or know if they do cause problems. Everything ive read says there is no proof but they can cause problems. I want my husband to ask his doctor but beinga typical man he wants to wait until his next appt in a mth but I don’t want to waste money on acupuncture if there is little chance of conceiving. Feeling quite upset about everything!

Thanks

Louise

Hi Louise,

Impotence is an unfortunate, uncommon side effect of amlodipine but none the less, I agree with you, that it is worth approaching the doctor to see if the tablets can be changed for an alternative medication. I am sure he is really embarrassed at bringing the subject up with the doctor - all the ‘man’ and ‘manhood’ thoughts.

Maybe one solution, given you have been trying unsuccessfully for almost a year, you could ask your husband to come with you to an appointment about your fertility and whether they think it would be worth having a HSG test or anything then happen to mention your husbands medication in that meeting… This way you get to bring the time before he sees the doctor forward without him realising it.

Best of luck,
