HCG Fluctuation

Hello,

I found out 4 weeks :? ago that my pregnancy is ectopic and I am currently on expectant management for this. My initial HCG levels were at 809 and I had an initial drop, this then increased and dropped again. I have been moved to weekly testing and I have had another increase last week. This has now dropped again slightly. My levels are now at 423 and I have been asked to go back in a weeks time for repeat bloods. My question i suppose is has anyone has this and successfully avoided treatment? There is limited information on the rising and falling bloods as everything suggests only a fall is acceptable

Dear Shalise,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss,

We do hear from women who have an odd spike in hCG levels or levels that plateau for a while before settling with expectant management and medical management with methotrexate. It is difficult to predict how quickly our levels will fall and for.some, it can take up to 3 months.

Unfortunately I am not trained to advise why your levels are fluctuating in such a manor, I presume your doctors are looking at an overall trend. If you are concerned, I would advise asking your medical team.

We would advise on not doing any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise whilst your levels are reducing.

I’m so sorry this is happening to you. Must be so frustrating. The one positive is your hcg isn’t in the thousands. That could be why they are sticking to not intervening.

I’ve recently dropped to a hcg of 0. During the weekly trips to the hospital the nurse said medically if a hcg rises and then falls they arent that concerned because hcg should go one way or then another but if its the rising, falling and rising again then to them something is wrong and thats what happened with me. I did have a mtx injection but i had a 4600 hcg.

If you are concerned you could ask your nurse.

Thank for your responses. I have now had 3 drops in a town and at 227 so is going in the right direction! Fingers crossed it carries on that way xx

Dear Shalise,

That is really positive news. I will keep everything crossed it continues to go in the right direction now,

Sending much love,

For anyone with a similar situation to me, my levels were 6 today and so I have been discharged from early pregnancy unit. It’s taken 7 weeks and 12 blood tests with 2 increasing during that time to get here but was still able to do it with expectant management x
