First fertility clinic appointment

Hi all,

I just thought I would share my experience of my first fertility appointment for anyone going down the same route. I had an ectopic pregnancy in January 17 which resulted in the removal of my left Fallopian tube. We have been trying again ever since with no success. So I spoke with my GP who referred me for fertility tests.

My partner and I attended the clinic today and saw a consultant and a nurse. They weighed me and asked a series of questions about our health. The consultant explained some possible causes for infertility and explained about reduced fertility after ectopic. He has referred me for a hsg (dye test) to check the health of my remaining tube- this has to be done between days 1-10 if your cycle. Prior to having this test you have to have a standard clamidya swab test which he did today. Then it’s blood tests at my next cycle on day 2 and 21 (day one of the cycle is counted from the first day of your period). My partner has to take in a sperm sample and the consultant will see us again within two months (but of a wait but I’m sure it will soon come round) at which point he will complete an internal scan to check the health of my ovaries etc.

It definitely feels more positive that it’s being looking into hopefully this will be the year for us! I will post again at the next appointment for anyone preparing for the same sort of investigations.

Love and luck to all!

Jen

Hi Jen

How to you manage to get an appointment? It’s so difficult at my GPS , they don’t listen and just fob me off. My husband went for referral for semen analysis and tried to turn him away but said that I’d be coming for a referral and they need him to do one so why can’t he just do it now. Anyway they have allowed him to do one. Good luck with everything

Xx

Hi Yas,

Thank you for your post  really? That’s awful and so frustrating!! How long have you been trying for? I’m lucky my gp is very kind and understanding and put the referral to the fertility clinic in straight away. Could you ask to see a different GP? I was worried they would fob me off too but I was lucky I would definitely go back again to adifferent doctor and Insist they refer you ASAP. I’m pleased they have allowed your husband to do a sample that’s a big positive  keep me posted xxx

Hi Jen, I had mxt in March then surgery in April. We had to wait 3 months so started trying in July 2017. I know it isn’t a long time as it can take a “normal” woman 12-18 months but it’s affecting me mentally / emotionally - keep thinking it’ll never happen! I haven’t actually gone to the doctors for a referral as I know what they’re like and will try and fob me off and worried about it. Im 27 so they’ll tell me that I’ll have to have been trying for 12 months at least. I think I’ll go back next month as that will be 12 months since my diagnosis. Hopefully they will refer me x

Heyy yas,

I understand how you feel it’s so frustrating and a worrying and draining time. I would go at 12 months and see what they say. I am 32 but my doctor was really understanding and referred me without question and the consultant I’ve seen since was really good too and even explained to me I had done the right thing in going as fertility is slightly reduced after ectopic due to one tube and the risk of having another. Going for tests has certainly started to put me at ease, I think it’s the knowing they are taking us seriously xxx
