Fertility referral

Hi everyone I had an ectopic last January was my first pregnancy and since then have been trying for over a year with no success getting really down as everyone around me seems pregnant and every month just seems a disappointment, I’ve been to the gp who just seems to shrug it off he’s done some blood work but won’t refer me to a specialist because on qoute I haven’t been trying for 5 years!!! It’s been 2 years since my husband and I started trying and it’s really getting me down All I want to be is a mother more than anything and just want help if I can get it, is anyone else in the same boat or knows if I can be seen? Lucy x

Hi lucy,

The national institute of clinical excellence (nice) guidelines state if you have been trying for 2 years without success then a referral to a specialist is recommended! Maybe see another doctor ir even quote the guidelines see if they change there mind maybe?

Hope this helps xxx

Thanks that really does h84 will quote that when I go see him next  xxx

Hi Lucy

The guidance on this website says see your doctor if you have tried for a year after ectopic if you are under 35 or after 6 months if you are over 35. So not sure where the 5 years has come from?!

I am unfortunately in the same situation- been trying for 1 and half years after ectopic with no success, saw doctor after a year so now going through fertility tests. So you know roughly what to expect, my doctor took blood tests to check hormones, and my husband had to be tested too. These came back ok so they then referred me to fertility clinic at local hospital- so far had HyCoSy to check remaining tube wasn’t blocked (which it wasn’t  ) and had a load more blood tests which I am waiting on results of.

I know how you feel very disappointing every month, but hopefully we will get there in the end. Good luck! x

Stay positive ladies - I had a ruptured ectopic in May 2010 and lost my left tube. We had trouble catching again and I finally got referred for fertility testing. We needed ivf, but we got there in the end and my baby daughter is sleeping in the next room.

I really do know how you are feeling now and how frustrating it is. Things moved quite quickly for me when I was finally referred and it felt so good to be moving forward and doing something positive. Just hold onto your dreams of a family and believe that one day you will get there. Sending you both lots and lots of luck xxx

Thanks for your post always nice to hear a success story. Sounds like you had a tough time getting there, but glad it worked out for you in the end

Maybe speak to your Early Pregnancy they might be able to refer you. That’s what ours have did. X

Try and see a different doctor- 5 years is rubbish.

We had an ectopic in October 2013 and in September 2014 we were referred to fertility clinic. They advised us to keep trying for a few more months and 6 weeks ago we were referred for IVF, had had the consultation and start treatment in the next few weeks. If you can get a referral to the fertility clinic you will probably find things happen quite quickly after that, so I would try and see a different doctor who may be more sympathetic.

I know it was a female gp I saw she said she couldn’t refere me as I hadn’t been trying for 5 years and even suggested I was lucky to have an ectopic as a lot of the ladies she sees haven’t even got pregnant…yes great! But she ran some blood tests. Thanks for all your lovely replies and so lovely to hear a success story, sometimes I fear it’s never going to happen for us, my hubby has just been tested and that’s all ok but my progesterone was low indicating I’m not oving but took your ladies advice and really pushed my gp a different one this time! and got an appointment in May to see a specialist thanks for all your replies it’s nice to know I’m not alone my friends are great but they all have kids so it’s hard for them to understand exactly what I’m going through am pleased that things seem to be moving forward now hope you’re all doing ok? Lucy xx

Glad they are referring you and getting things moving. I had my results from fertility tests today and all ok, they have advised to try for another year and if nothing happens eligible for ivf on the nhs as it will then be 3 years since our first pregnancy that ended in ectopic. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it happens within the next year.Good luck to everyone x

Hi, I’m in a similar place in my journey to be a mother. We have just passed the year mark of trying after a ruptured ectopic. Went to see my gp earlier this week and she has said she’ll eefer me to the gyne team. She said its best to get me I. The system earlier rather than later. I think you should make an appointment with another Dr and get their opinion. I am feeling apprehensive about hay the gyne team may suggest. Has anyone had a dye test before? That was one thing the Dr suggested may be recommended xx

That’s good news about your tests kr83 wishing you lots of luck, I was a bit shocked when they said they don’t think I’m ovulating due to my low progesterone because I just assumed I did because of the ectopic. I went to see a different doctor countryside and have now got an appointment to see a gynaecologist in May so glad things seem to be moving in the right direction, was in tears at the doctors when they told me 5 years, I’m a bit apprehensive about that too think its a standard test they do and have heard that it can clear small blockages in your tubes if you have any, just hate waiting I always assumed by now I’d have a baby trying to keep positive but sometimes feel my life is on hold xxxx

Hi both,

I think the dye test is the same test I had- they called it a HyCoSy, its not that bad, a bit painful but mine was over and done with in about 10 mins. They do it to see if the tube(s) are clear and heard that if you do have minor blockages it can clear them.

Lucy I have read that they can give you Clomid which stimulates hormone which makes you ovulate so they may suggest this?

Good luck x
