Femara & Estrogen Gel

Hi Ladies, after 4 Ectopic pregnancies and 1 miscarriage i have finally picked up the courage to try again. On dec 7th im starting on a drug called Femara are any of you on this? And doc has also said that as soon as i get a BFP he will start me on Estrogen gel to help embryo stick. Anyone else having similar treatment?

4 ectopic pregnancies?! Poor you, I’m so sorry for your losses, I know what I was like after one ectopic and a miscarriage. Well done for taking such a positive step. I’m afraid I can’t comment on Femara as I was put on Clomid (did 7 cycles, hated it with a passion and it did nothing for me, eventually had my little girl after second IVF) and I understand Femara is quite different (supposedly more effective, depending dosage, clears your system faster etc). Sorry not to be more helpful but just wanted to wish you loads of luck. Have you still got both/one of your tubes in pretty good nick then? Hopefully someone will be along with experience of Femara you can chat with, all the best with it

Thanks for your reply Leah

Yes i still have one perfect tube  My 1st Ep was in my right tube and they removed tube but left stump behind, 2nd Ep was in the stump which was then ‘supposedly’ removed, 3rd & 4th Ep were in unknown locations and treated with Meth. In 2011 i asked for lap & dye test to check my good tube. Good tube was perfect but they had never removed my stump after my 2nd ep  so they did it there and then.

I never had a problem getting pregnant on any of those pregnancies but last year we were trying for 12 mths with no joy, so they decided to open me AGAIN and discovered i had a cyst blocking my good tube. So thats now removed since apr and ill start trying again now in December. I feel tired just thinking about the stress of it all lol.

I tried clomid myself last year but just for 2 mths i hated it so fingers crossed Femara works. And fingers crossed for you also sweetheart

Hi Tanya

Sounds like you’ve really been through the mill :frowning: I was on clomid for 11 months in total  after an ep in 2008 where they removed a tube. On the second cycle I did conceive but unfortunately mc around 11 weeks. Clomid was a terrible drug in terms of side effects and I found they got stronger in consecutive cycles. I did try Femara too (although I think it’s harder to get it prescribed) for 2 cycles after 3 failed attempts at IVF and found that although the side effects were a lot less noticeable (anything less noticeable than IVF drugs!!) it didn’t give me a strong ovulation like with clomid. I have also read that other breast cancer drugs are sometimes used to treat ovulatory infertility such as Tamoxifen but i have never been recommended these. I was very lucky to finally be offered a laparoscopy with ‘ovarian drilling’ where they lasered little holes in my ovaries to help me ovulate and I conceived naturally afterwards, now 24 weeks pregnant. Really never thought it would happen after 4 years! I was just wondering why you are being offered these drugs if you get pregnant quite easily naturally? I was never offered the oestrogen gel but it can’t hurt and drugs like clomid and femara are ‘anti-oestrogens’ so it does make sense.

If there’s anything else you’d like to know, please feel free to ask and good luck with ttc. I know how hard it can be xxx

Thanks for your replies girls. Yes i still have one tube and supposedly its perfect. Last year when i tried the clomid for 2 cycles, he had put me on it because we had been trying to conceive for 12 mths when normally it only takes a few. But the reason for that seems to have been a cyst at the tip of my tube. The cyst has now been removed and my tube blasted, and he said i could start the Femara next mth just to speed things up because im 35. Nerves are kicking in already because ill be starting it around the 7th or so of Dec. I was going to wait until after xmas but sure whats the point, i wont now if its worked until the beginning of Jan anyway unless i turn green after my Turkey

Hi Tanya, just wanted to let you know that I was on chlomid for 6 months and also hated it. I went on Femara for one month and it was the first month I got pregnant! I have no idea if it was the Femara, or the temping, or just luck. But I feel like it worked for me, even though it also resulted in an ectopic pregnancy. Research I have read says Femara is just as effective as Clomid, but doesn’t thin your lining or give you the terrible side effects of Clomid. So to me, that makes it a better choice! Here in the US, insurance companies like to put you on Clomid first because it’s cheaper, and Doctors say that Femara does not have as much research done on it as Clomid. Hope that helps.
