Etopic Pregnancy after IVF

Hello All,

I had an etopic pregnancy after a fresh 5 day embryo transfer. At 6 weeks my HCG went from 7900 to 1700, so was told I was miscarrying to come back in 2 weeks by the early pregnancy unit, started bleeding, went back at 8 weeks told they couldn’t see baby in womb, my HCG had doubled to 4600 so must be etopic, so had methotrexate, bled for 12 weeks until hcg got to 0, continuous pain.

About to do a frozen embryo transfer in a couple weeks, around 2 months post HCG at 0, over 3 months post mxt injection. Very soon as I’ve heard conceiving within 3 months you’re more likely to conceive rather than waiting. Obviously nervous it will happen again.

My question is why is IVF a risk factor in etopic pregnancies? The NHS were blaming IVF. On the NHS website its a rick factor. I’ve done my research and it’s not clear at all. I have seen research says you are less likely to have an etopic if you do a frozen rather than a fresh, there’s no evidence why but the guess is the excessive production on eggs and eostrogen affects the womb more than usual. Just wondered if anyone else has heard anything else on this.

Dear Chaoticblues,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss,

I think there is a lack of information for you as there is so little evidence in this field. One theory as to why there is an increased risk is it there is a high placement of the egg, however this has not been thoroughly researched either.

I’m afraid I do not know about a difference between fresh and frozen embryo transfers as this is such a specific area of medicine and I would ask your specialist doctors who may have answers for you.

Sending positive thoughts for your next cycle.

Sending much love,

Karen x
