I am 41, this year I have had 2 losses, 2 failed IUIs and finally an ectopic pregnancy in August/September. I was treated with two shots of methotrexate and am currently waiting for that to clear from my system before we try again. The doctor at the IVF clinic suggested that it would be a good idea to go for IVF next as the embryo is planted directly in uterus reducing my risk of another ectopic. I read yesterday that actually IVF after an ectopic might be a bad choice and put me at a higher risk of an ectopic than trying naturally. Am so confused. Anyone had a similar situation or know of any information I can read up on?
Hi Tigletty,
I am so sorry to hear of your losses as I know how frustrating and emotionally fraught ttc can be. As I’m not medically qualified, I can’t specifically comment on your history. However, to confirm, even with IVF there is a risk of ectopic pregnancy. The Trust shares:
There is a chance of ectopic pregnancy resulting from embryo transfer during IVF treatment as embryos can travel into the Fallopian tube, for example, during the implantation stage.
You have made mention of becoming pregnant naturally, and while I don’t know when this was, it is a good sign that you are able to conceive. I know it doesn’t make the losses easier, but it may help as you consider your next steps.
No matter what, we are here for you for anything you need. For as long as you need.
With good wishes,
Michele
