Hello,
I would really appreciate anyone being able to share their thoughts or experiences on IVF after ectopics. Over the past few years I have had 2 ectopics with one tube removal and then managed to conceive our little miracle who is now 2 years old, but have since gone on to have another ectopic and then miscarriage last year. We have been unable to conceive again since then, and in all honesty the reality of it being a successful pregnancy is so low now that I think our best option will be IVF. At my last ectopic last year however, I had asked the consultant about IVf and she had told me that this wouldn’t be an option for me as it increases the chance of ectopic… at the time, this didn’t make much sense to me but I didn’t explore it any further. My understanding now however is that this is not correct, and we would actually be quite good candidates for IVF … I would really appreciate hearing anyone with similar experiences though. It’s very hard to come to terms with the fact that my only option would be to keep on having ectopic after ectopic … surely ivf is a valid option?
Thanks in advance x
Hello,
I have had 2 EP-s, one tube removed, one saved. After dye test my tube was confirmed clear but I did not get pregnant within six months and because of my age doctors suggested ivf. As they said that the test cannot give 100% certainty that it will not be another ectopic, as the test does not show everything.
We are starting our ivf any day now and my doctors have told me that the chance for ectopic is less than it would be if I would try naturally. They have definitely encouraged us to go through with ivf, as they believe this is our only option.
Of course we don’t know will it be ok, can keep you posted when we have done it. Don’t give up.
take care
Hi Margaret,
Appreciate you sharing your story and good to know it’s something that’s been recommended for you. I’m feeling quite frustrated now though as to why it hasn’t been recommended to us years ago after the first couple of ectopics.
Anyway, I hope the treatment goes well for you and that you get a lovely little bean implanted in the right place. Would really like to hear how you get on and sending lots of luck your way.
X
Hello!
You should definitely be allowed to go for IVF- our ectopic was from a frozen embryo transfer trying to conceive a sibling for our first IVF baby, and although we don’t know the cause of the ectopic and there’s always a possibility that it was because of the increased risk inherant in IVF, none of our consultants have suggested that that’s any reason not to keep trying- we’ve had one unsuccesful cycle since and are about to go for another one.
Hi all
I’m not sure if this post is still active, but I was told something very similar. I’ve had two ectopics (one tube removed, the other saved). My consultant recommended I try again naturally because the risk of an ectopic was higher through IVF than natural conception. She said the only way she’d refer me to IVF was if she did surgery and clipped my remaining tube.
I wasn’t sure that was correct (although it’s so difficult to question someone with decades of medical practice and training!) We got a second opinion from a private consultant who specialises in this, and he said that it wasn’t true - that IVF presented a lower risk of ectopic. But that he still recommended we try again naturally because we’re still relatively young.
So now we’re really confused and don’t know what to do. I’m terrified to try again for natural conception, I just don’t see how it could possibly be in the right place. I’m having nightmares and really high anxiety thinking about trying again and each month hoping I’m pregnant, but being terrified. But everyone says IVF is also a really difficult path…
Any advice would be appreciated
J
