Ectopic pregnancy after IVF

Hello,

I had an ectopic pregnancy in July 2024, resulting in a ruptured right tube and emergency surgery. I have faced and over come many challenges since then, emotionally and physically. I do from time to time have waves of sadness and thoughts that pop into my head that aren’t helpful, and if I have stomach pain now I can get quite anxious.
My partner is my absolute rock and is absolutely always there for me. We had been trying to get pregnant for 4 years before starting our IVF journey. Our chances of conceiving naturally are very slim anyway and now without one of my fallopian tubes it’s even less. We are desperate for our own family but I am absolutely petrified of having another ectopic pregnancy and having to go through IVF again. Has anybody had success with IVF after an ectopic pregnancy and how did you cope with everything emotionally? Or did you conceive naturally?
Thankyou for reading

Hi Rosalie95,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss. It is natural to be worried after everything you have been through.

The decision to ttc following an ectopic pregnancy brings up so many emotions and questions. After our ectopic pregnancies, we become more knowledgeable about what could happen and this becomes part of our decision making. It took me a very long time to become comfortable with the idea of trying again, over a year. Part of the decision came because I had started to forget a little bit of the immediate trauma, another part was a surrender of control. Neither was easy and I did feel anxious during the pregnancy. It’s very important to take the decision to ttc in your own time, even if it takes longer than you hoped.

There are women on these boards who have conceived after IVF. Sadly, even with IVF, there is the risk of ectopic pregnancy. However, it is important to remember that help is available, and your doctors should book you in for an early scan at around six weeks to check that the embryo is in the right place. I am not sure where you are located, but if you are in the UK, you can also contact your local Early Pregnancy Unit directly and self-refer for an early scan. This can also give you peace of mind that you have the care available should you need some reassurance.

No matter what, we are here for you for anything you need. For as long as you need.

With good wishes,

Michele
