Ectopic or normal miscarriage - Is there a way to ever know?

I’m so fed up and confused. I’ve had 2 previous ectopics, both in my left tube. 1st was exp managed, 2nd I had my left tube removed. This was in the space of 6 months and I don’t have to tell you how heartbreaking and difficult it has been.

I was told after my operation that my right tube looked fine and so my husband and I had some faith that one day we would get our miracle baby

After 2 normal periods and barely any pain we decided to try again and got pregnant straightaway.

However, the pain started immediately, along with the worry. So I went in for an early scan and blood tests. My tests showed a healthy increase of hcg from 28 to 82 so I was booked in for a 6 week scan.

Last night at 5 weeks I started bleeding and the pain was becoming really bad in my right (healthy) tube so we went into A&E this morning and my blood test had dropped down to 32 so we know the pregnancy isn’t viable.

What they couldn’t tell us, and what we needed to know, was if it was another ectopic in my remaining tube or just a normal miscarriage. My husband has said we can’t keep going through this stress and potentially just keep having ectopics.

I don’t know what to do anymore. I just wish I knew if my right tube was good or not. Maybe I should just go straight to IVF?!

Any advice would help x

Hi

Sorry for your losses. I am in a very similar situation.

2 ectopics within 6 months 1st surgery managed to save tube due to miscarrying out. 2nd expectant management (took 4 months for HCG <5

We found out pregnant again 2.5 weeks ago bloods looked okish 15,38,137. (38 AND 137 4 day gap) I then started bleeding on Tuesday light pink bit brown, Then levels dropped to 117. I will prob never know if was another ectopic or miscarriage. I think miscarriage because i never bled this much as i am now with 2 ectopics and when scanned at 4 weeks lining was 9.7mm which it never has been b4 they never saw pregancvy cause was to early.

More bloods 2moz to see whats going in. It is the most awful thing.

Can i please ask if you have been offered IVF?

Speak soon take care xxx

Hi E89, I’m so sorry this has taken so long to reply. I needed to have a break from trying and obsessing!

We have taken a 6 month break from trying and are now going to have another shot at trying naturally. We know we have a high chance of another ectopic, but have had lots of conversations with the hospital around IVF.

Turns out ectopic patients are quite high success candidates for IVF! However I have been told that the risk is still there for an ectopic, even through IVF. So, if we want to go down that route they would remove my remaining tube anyway, so we thought ‘what the hell’. We might as well try and see!

How are you getting on? Any progression? Xx
