Differences between ectopic and non-ectopic symptoms?

Hi there,

I was wondering, for those of you that have had healthy pregnancies after an ectopic, were your symptoms very different? I’m unsure whether the symptoms I had were just hcg related so would be the same next time I get pregnant, or if I’ll have different symptoms for a healthy pregnancy.

I understand every pregnancy is different, even in the one person, but I’m still interested to see what others have experience regarding this topic.

Thanks

Dear Cedarwattle,

As you say, every pregnancy and every lady is different but as you have asked for personal experiences, I will try my best to help.

My first pregnancy, was sadly my ectopic pregnancy. I had a very strong positive pregnancy test. A few weeks into the pregnancy I experienced a few twinges but nothing major and felt otherwise very well. I was tired but no nausea or other symptoms. Then suddenly one day, excruciating pain and heavy bleeding.

My second pregnancy was successful, I had a very, very faint pregnancy test, which really worried me. I experienced abdominal pains again and worried myself stupid. I went to the doctor’s and was admitted to hospital where I was told there was nothing showing up on my scan (I was just over 5weeks) and my hCG was lower than expected so to go home and return for another scan a week later but prepare for it being ectopic again. I had no other symptoms. A few weeks later (after the pregnancy was confirmed) I developed breast tenderness.

My third pregnancy was luckily successful too. I had a suspicion I maybe pregnant as I couldn’t stand the smell of the dishwasher (it was like a metallic smell, that I could taste- weird, I know!). Strong positive pregnancy test, abdominal twinges (although not as bad as the second pregnancy so wasn’t admitted to hospital). Low hCG levels and again advised to prepare for the worst, but scan identified successful pregnancy a week later. I suffered with nausea and vomiting (day and night time) with this pregnancy.

I hope this helps,

We are here for you for as long as you need.

Sending much love,

Karen x
