C section scar ectopic - told to wait 6-12 months for new pregnancy

Hi

I know I’m a rare one with an ectopic scar pregnancy just passed but can anyone shed some light on why I am being told to wait 6-12 months and ideally 12 months before trying again?

I had a D&C back in 2019 at 12 weeks and I could try after one period had passed.

I’m just confused as the surgery I had for the CSE went smoothly I’m told and no drugs were used. So this to me is a regular D&C.

Thanks

Hi Future_dreams,

I am so sorry to hear that you have suffered this ectopic pregnancy and loss. It is still very recent and can leave us with many questions. I will do my best to help.

C-section scar ectopic pregnancies are rare and serious events. It is not the same as a D&C. The complications of proceeding with any ectopic pregnancy are life-threatening for the mother. C-section scar ectopics are often diagnosed later than desired, leaving greater levels of complications. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to avoid greater complications. It sounds like this was the case with yours.

As I’m not medically qualified, I encourage you to follow up with your doctors with specific questions, including this guidance on waiting to ttc. With increasing levels of c-sections in the UK, there is a greater incidence of these ectopics, but research/diagnosis is still emerging. The guidance to wait is likely based on the best advice doctors have to date to allow for appropriate healing from the surgery.

I encourage you to keep an open conversation with your doctors, writing down questions as you have them to bring to future appointments. These forums are filled with experiences of various types of ectopic pregnancy and recovery. We are also here for as long as you need.

With good wishes,

Michele
