Hey all,
So I’m 25 and a week ago today I was told my pregnancy was ectopic on my left side. I was in a position where I could have methotrexate, so I had the injection on Friday the 31st.
On Monday I went in to the hospital for a blood test, that came back good. Then on Thursday (so yesterday) I had my internal scan and another blood test. My levels have halved and my ectopic has shrunk, but not moved. From the scan we also found out I have a cyst on my right ovary now, it wasn’t there before.
Yesterday no-one was worried and I felt fine (if a bit emotional). Today I’ve been in quite a lot of discomfort. It’s not as like the pain I was in before (which was why I went to the hospital in the first place). That was a 10. I’d say this is a 7 or 8.
I know I can expect cramping etc. But I kind of expect it to have started sooner. Unfortunately the unit I’m usually going to is now closed and I’m worrying.
Does anyone have any tips on how to manage this pain?
Thanks
P
Dear blueeyes,
I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy and loss.
Cramping abdominal (tummy) pain is the most common side effect, and it usually occurs during the first 2 to 3 days of treatment. But like you my pain/cramping started about a week after the injection.
It is good to hear that your hCG levels are decreasing however although I do not wish to alarm you, occasionally, an ectopic pregnancy can rupture despite low hCG levels.
Sadly I am not medically trained so cannot give you specific advice on your symptoms but because abdominal pain is also a sign of a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, we advise that you report any abdominal pain to your health professional.
I understand that your local unit is closed but most EPUs will advise to attend Accident and Emergency (A&E) department. If you have not been told what to do and need to speak to someone we advise to ring the out of hours service, NHS 111 Service by dialling 111.
I understand that this is a worrying time but it is better to be safe and seek medical advice.
Sending much love and warm hugs,
Karen x
