Paranoid

Hi there,

After my miscarriage in April, we were excited and scared to try again. I tested positive for pregnancy early July, but thought I had had a period 2 weeks prior. I also was experiencing pain and knew something was wrong. Went in and they found a huge cyst on my ovary and thought that was that but my hcg (pregnancy hormone) was moving up slower than they would have liked. Anyways, wound up in the hospital last sunday with pain and bleeding. Assumed it was a miscarriage but they found I had/am having an ectopic pregnancy. So I had to have injections. Then my hcg was supposed to drop but it went up this week which I know can happen, but luckily it came down yesterday so no second shot needed as of now.

However my anxiety is through the roof. I think I have been a bit dizzy the past two days but am I overthinking it? What is dizzy-enough to indicate a rupture? Also, my bleeding. How much bleeding indicates a rupture? I have blood every time I wipe but it’s not filling a pad or anything. Should I go and get an ultrasound to be safe? How much pain would I be in for it to be a rupture?

Anyone who had a rupture, what were the tell tale signs?? It’s all I think about.

I also have cramping and back pain but light and not stabbing or anything. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Nicole

Dear Nicole,

I am so sorry to hear of your ectopic pregnancy loss. To experience one loss is difficult, dealing with multiple losses is heartbreaking and my heart truly goes goes out to you,

I too was treated with methotrexate and really do appreciate what a nerve wracking time it is waiting for hCG levels to reduce and worrying about possible rupture. It is good news that your levels are reducing.

You ask about what a rupture would look like, but unfortunately there is no set answer as every person is different, everyone’s pain levels and bleeding symptoms are different.

It is normal to bleed and have some pain, and I would just monitor how your own symptoms and is you develop sudden worsening bleeding or pain, to seek urgent medical attention.

You should be having blood tests every 3-7 days depending upon the results and seeing them reduce should hopefully start to reassure you.

You mention you feel dizzy, we can sometimes feel this with anxiety however, I am not able to provide individual medical advice and if you are concerned at all please seek medical advice.

I would not advise any testing, including ultrasound scans, unless advised by your medical team.

In the meantime, we advise not to to anything that increases intra-abdominal pressure, including any heavy lifting or housework or exercise.

Try to keep your mind busy, spend time with friends or relatives, to for gentle walks, read, watch boxsets, whatever you can do to help distract.

We will be here for you for as long as you need,

Sending much love,

Karen x
