2nd period post ectopic- worried it's another ectopic pregnancy

I had an ectopic pregnancy in December and I was lucky enough to be expectantly managed.

We were told we could start trying again after I’d had a period. I had my first proper period in January. It was a bit shorter than normal but otherwise felt pretty standard.

I should be on to my second period, but I didn’t start bleeding until day 34 of my cycle (I’m usually a very stable 28 days) and so far it’s not like a proper period. It’s much lighter and more watery. It only started this evening but I’m just terrified it’s another ectopic. I didn’t realise I was pregnant with the last one as I still had a bit of a period, but it was very similar to what’s happening now - later and lighter.

So far I’ve had negative pregnancy tests but I can’t sleep I’m so terrified :pensive:

Dear Nervous,

It is absolutely normal to be worried with these symptoms especially as they remind you of your previous ectopic pregnancy.

As a general rule, we at the Trust advise that it may be best to wait for at least three months or two full menstrual cycles (periods) before trying to conceive for both physical and emotional reasons. This timeframe is to allow your cycle to return to normal and for there to be a clear period to date a new pregnancy from.

As periods can take a number of months to return to a cycle and flow that is more normal for you, it is difficult to tell if the bleeding you are experiencing is to be expected, or as you have been trying to conceive, if this is something to be concerned about.

I would therefore advise to seek medical advice if you are concerned. They may be able to take bloods for hCG which will give a clearer indication of a pregnancy.

Although I do not wish to alarm you, if you develop heavier bleeding, tummy pain, shoulder tip pain or you feel dizzy and unwell, please seek urgent medical advice.

Sending much love,

Karen x
